“カヴァー”とは演じることに近い。アーティストにとっては、どう演じるか、聴き手にどう作用するか、そこで“良いか、悪いか”の判断も下る。
美声ヴォーカル・グループ、SMOOTH ACEの新作は、洋楽カヴァー集の第1弾として、『アルマゲドン』『天使にラブソングを2』『タイタニック』などのポピュラーな映画主題歌のカヴァー集だ。今回彼らは、ピアノと弦楽器のトリオとのコラボレートにより、深みがあり、かつ艶やかで、洗練された世界観を醸し出すことに成功している。さらに、4人の美声と3種の楽器の音が混ざり合う妙味。4+3=7という単なる足し算の答えではない、遥かにそれ以上の効果が表われている。意外な選曲にも思えたが美しく歌い上げる(1)、クールにアレンジされその変わりように驚いた(7)、壮大なイメージを残しつつも緻密なコーラス・ワークが光る(8)などなど、聴きどころは多い。思い出の映画のラスト・シーンが心地よく浮かんでくる、“良い”作品だ。 (清水隆) --- 2003年10月号

Smooth Aceの洋楽カバーアルバム。
今までに、何枚もカバーアルバムは出していますが洋楽は初です。
選曲は有名な映画のテーマ曲でSmooth Aceを知らない人にもすんなりと入れるのではないかと思います。
しかし、オリジナルとはイメージの違うアレンジを加えており、オリジナルを好きな人には少し戸惑いを与えるかもしれません。

主にアレンジはチェロやバイオリンを使ったもので少しオトナの演出。
そこにSmooth Ace４名のハーモニーが重なり私にはたまらないのですが…。
