Let Freedom Ringは、素晴らしいアルバムなんだけど、
[MAXI]って、どう言う事なんだろう？
ちょっと興味津々だ。
ただの表記ミスなのかな？
だとしたらこれは絶対に買いのアルバムです。
ＣＣＣＤになっているのが出ているからより貴重になります。
内容は全く持って素晴らしいんですから。

独創的な優れたミュージシャンは、同じことを繰り返すのに飽きて、新しい何かを求めて、音楽的な実験を繰り返す。
それまでのハードバップからの脱却を目指し、モードへの接近を図った作品。1曲目から風変わりなテーマ、ワンコードのアドリブ、強烈なフリークトーン、とそれまでのマクリーンから、より「自由」な音楽を作り上げている。2曲目はバドパウエルの美しいバラード。胸が締め付けられるようだ。前衛、とはいってもそこらじゅうにマクリーン節が埋め込まれているので、ほっとしたり、にやっとしたりと楽しい。
お勧めですね。

サイドメンとして数多くのセッションに名を連ねてきたマクリーンだが、個性的な音色とフレーズを持ちながらもオーソドックスで正統的パーカ派のアルト奏者として信頼を集めてきた。そのマクリーンがオーネット・コールマンの影響を強く感じさせるフリー・ジャズ的世界を展開している。６２年といえばコールマンのフリー・ジャズ革命も一段落し、これまでのハード･バップやファンキー、モードを主体とする新主流派などの動きが重なり合うように展開し、ジャズが多様化の途をたどろうとした時代でもある。ここでマクリーンはそれまでのサイドメンとしての過去をかなぐり捨てるようにしてフリーへの挑戦しているように思える。このアルバムで聴かれるマクリーンは５０年代後半よりたくましく自信を持った音色で、激しく力強く楽器を鳴らしている。時に太い低音、そしてフリーキーな高音を繰り出し、革新性を前面に打ち出しているのが特徴である。ドラムがオーネット･コールマンと共演したビリー・ヒギンズなので、余計コールマンの雰囲気が前面に出ているのかもしれない。それでも２曲目のパド･パウエルのオリジナルバラード、アイル・キープ・ラヴィング・ユー ではしっとりと歌い上げ本領を発揮している。このあとマクリーンは迷いながらも、彼の個性をつくりだしていった。その意味ではこのような実験もあながち無駄というわけでなく、時代と自分自身への挑戦をした意欲作と見ることも出来よう。
