このアルバムのほとんどは、ポールがイギリスで演奏旅行をしていた頃に作られた曲です。「サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」は、すでに大ヒットした後ですが、その他の曲もその後受け入れられて、現在でも歌い継がれています。映画「卒業」に使われた、「サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」と「4月になれば彼女は」。オールド・フレンズ・コンサートで、現在でも歌われている「木の葉は緑」や「キャシーの歌」「アイ・アム・ア・ロック」などは、スタンダードといっても過言ではありません。「リチャード・コリー」は、かつてポール・マッカートニー＆ウイングスが、ステージで歌ったナンバーでした。アルバム発売時は、ロック・グループの波が押し寄せ始めた時で、どちらかというと、S&Gとしては、ぎこちなさが感じられましたが、今や名盤です。ポールのギター独奏「アンジー」は、聴き応えがあります。CDには、ボーナス・トラックとして、イギリス活動時代に共作した曲も入っており、得する一枚です。

'93年以来の再結成、さらには、'82-'83年以来20年ぶりの本格的なツアーを開始したサイモン＆ガーファンクルの不朽の名作が、ボーナス・トラックを収録した紙ケース限定仕様でよみがりました。しかも、全曲二人の監修のもとデジタル・リマスタリングを行った音源とあれば、もういうことはありません。

1965年に発表されたサイモン＆ガーファンクルの2作目のオリジナル・アルバム。必ずしもポールの意図したところではなかったとはいえ、大ヒットした「サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」を受けて制作した作品であり、彼らの人気を確立したともいえる作品であり、全米チャートに143週チャート・インした超ロング・セラーです。

「1.サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」や「11. アイ・アム・ア・ロック」というフォークにロックのテイストを加えた大ヒット曲のほか、サイモン＆ガーファンクルらしい、美しいメロディの秀作「2. 木の葉は緑」や「9. 4月になれば彼女は」など、フォークからフォークロックへと変わりつつある、このアルバムならではの名曲の数々を収録しています。

ボーナス・トラックには、「明日にかける橋」の後に作られたらしい、'70年7月8日録音の未発表テイクを収録。資料的な価値も非常に高いアルバムです。

レコードとして発売されたオリジナルに忠実な紙パッケージといい、リマスタリングされた美しい音源といい、また、お買い得な価格に貴重なボーナス・トラックといい、このアルバムをすでにおもちの方にも、そうでない方にもお勧めの作品です。
