アルバム・ジャケットは冴えないのですが、S&Gの原点がここに詰まっています。アメリカで初めてチャートに上った、ロック仕立ての「サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」は、このアルバムの「サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」がベース。二人が知らない間に、この曲にエレキ・サウンドが加わって世界NO1になったのです。レコードでは、二人が一緒に歌っているということで「The Sounds Of Silence」と、ｓがついています。アルバム・タイトルの「水曜の朝、午前3時｣は、泥棒の詩（？）とも言われますが、曲調は優しく口ずさんでしまいそうなメロディ。英語が容易なため、中学校では、英語と音楽の教材に使われているところもあります。ボブ・ディランの曲なども入っており、宗教や反戦を中心にしたところは、彼らのコンセプト・アルバムの原点を感じさせます。

'93年以来の再結成，さらには，'82-'83年以来20年ぶりの本格的なツアーを開始したサイモン＆ガーファンクルの不朽の名作が，ボーナス・トラックを収録した紙ケース限定仕様でよみがりました．しかも，全曲二人の監修のもとデジタル・リマスタリングを行った音源とあれば，もういうことはありません．

1964年に発表されたサイモン＆ガーファンクルの記念すべき1作目のオリジナル・アルバム．発表当時は，まったくといいほど注目されなかったのですが，「サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」のシングル盤(ベースやドラムを加えたヴァージョン)のヒットともにロングセラーとなりました．ポール自身は，「サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」に勝手にベースなどを加えたことに激しい憤りを感じたらしいですが，結果的に，フォーク・ロックというジャンルを確立したサイモン＆ガーファンクルは，その後，数々の名曲をヒットさせていきます．

このアルバムは，「サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」のオリジナルをはじめとする，ロックが入る前のフォークそのものの作品です．シンプルでありながら繊細なメロディーと，メッセージ性の高い詩は，この作品ならではといえるでしょう．

レコードとして発売されたオリジナルに忠実な紙パッケージといい，リマスタリングされた美しい音源といい，また，お買い得な価格に貴重なボーナス・トラックといい，このアルバムをすでにおもちの方にも，そうでない方にもお勧めの作品です．
