ブラジル出身の名ピアニスト、フレイレは、2001年に20年以上の沈黙を破ってショパンを録音して話題となった。今回はシューマンの名曲で慈愛に満ちた演奏を聴かせてくれる。

2003年来日ではアルゲリッチとの共演に注目がいってしまうのだが、個性的なフレイレの演奏をじっくりと聴いてほしい、と思っていたらソロ・アルバムがちゃんと出ました。1944年生まれだから、円熟の時期をとうに迎えているはずなのだが、この人の演奏は若いときから円熟味を感じさせるものだったから、逆に今回のシューマンからはフレッシュな印象を与えられた。独特のフレージングに翻弄されているうちに、シューマンの狂気とピュアな魂が見えてくる。決して聴き流すことのできない、主張の多い演奏は、今や新鮮だ。 (堀江昭朗) --- 2003年10月号
