イタリアンロックの名作、クエラ・ヴェッキア・ロカンダの2nd。
邦題「歓喜の時」
昔から「泣きのストリングスを聴くにはこの作品ね」、と言われてきたほどの名作だ。
イントロのクラシカルなピアノも美しいが、続いて入って来るアコースティックギターと泣きのヴァイオリンの絡みはまさに絶品。そして盛り上がりでの大叙情にはただうっとり。
ここまで泣きの叙情を聴かせてくれるヴァイオリン入りロックはそうあるものではない。
やや粗削りだった1stに比べ、音自体が洗練されたこのアルバムは、バンドとしてのアンサンブルも見事で、ラストのヘヴィな大曲2曲も聴きどころだ。

　イタリア出身の6ピースのバンド、クエラ・ヴェッキア・ロカンダが1974年に発表した2nd。

　全編、バイオリンやコントラバスといったストリングス、サックスやフルートなどの管楽器、さらにピアノにハープシコードといったキーボードが効果的に散りばめられており、2.のタイトルの通り一種独特の雰囲気を持っている。コーラス、ソロとボーカルも美しい。ほとんどのパートには素人臭さが全く感じられず、完成度は高い。

　アコースティックな叙情美をたたえた1.、まさに室内楽のような2.、一転してジャズ的になり、ギターのリフが緊張感を帯びた音を聞かせる3.、今度は各種の弦楽器とリズム・セクションが見事な掛け合いを演じ、後半では朗々としたボーカルがすばらしい、クラシック~ジャズ風の4.と非の打ちどころがない。ここまで充実した時間を過ごせるアルバムは滅多にないと思う。
　このアルバムを発表した後でバンドは解散したようで、メンバーの動向は杳として知れないらしいが、そういった点も実にイタリア的。
　ただし5.は曲の出来の点で蛇足の感も否めない。
　このアルバムの初CD化は本邦で行われている。日本のマニア・パワー万歳。

最初叙情的室内楽という印象だったが、なかなかどうして引き出しの多いバンドである。基本はあくまで、表情豊かなピアノと流麗なストリングスである。しかし途中でジャズになったり、独特のコーラスを聴かせたり、初期クリムゾン風の一糸乱れぬアンサンブルがはじまったりと。それにしても、これほど生楽器が活躍するバンドは珍しいのではないか。作品全体的には、少し散漫な印象もあるが、大変ユニークサウンドなので、捨てがたい魅力がある。チェンバーが好きな人にもおすすめ。
