PFMとともにイタリアのプログレを代表するバンド、バンコ72年の１st。PFMよりイタリア臭がきつい。クラシックの美しさとハードロックの荒々しさを絶妙に融合しつつ、ジャズの素養も感じさせる。非常に前衛的でもある。ダイナミズムあふれるリズム隊、ピアノとオルガン中心の華麗に流れるキーボード、攻撃的なギターが切り込み、情熱的・叙情的な歌が乗る。愛すべき巨漢ボーカル・ジャコモさんのオペラ・カンタトゥーレのような唱法、透明感と哀愁に満ちた美声はイタリア音楽の魅力を存分に堪能させてくれる。
「安息の鎮魂曲」は変拍子を巧みに用いつつも聞きやすくノリがよい名曲。ハードロックとオルガン・ピアノが攻撃的に対話する曲調から一変、後半は悲壮感あふれるピアノにフルートが絡み感動的に高揚、涙が込み上げてくるような歌声。そして激しい渦の中、美しいピアノが滑り落ちて切れ味よくフィニッシュ！しびれる！「経過」は中休み的な小曲ながらチェンバロと歌のメロディーがとてもロマンティックで泣ける。大作「変身」は荒っぽいロックと荘厳なクラシックがアバンギャルドに入り乱れつつも整合感を失うことなく突き進む。切ない歌声のクライマックスは圧巻。大作「魔術師の園」はミステリアスで霧がかったような静寂の調べから、何度もドラマチックで壮大な盛り上がりを見せるも、その都度また不気味な静寂に沈む。だが、そのゆったりした部分でも途切れることない緊張感、影から飛び出してくる魔物を息を殺して待ち構えているような感覚。そして徐々に激しい熱狂と感動の渦に飲まれていき最後まで耳が離せない。各所に現れた印象的なテーマをハイライトで振り返り、ジャズっぽい響きでシブくしめる…という終わり方が非常にカッコよく、その余韻を残したままエンディングの小曲「痕跡」へと雪崩込み、教会音楽のような荘厳さの中をピアノが滑り落ちてフィニッシュ！この切れ味がたまらん！

「ダーウィン」とならぶバンコのデビュー作にして代表作。
ツイン・キーボードによるシンフォニックなサウンドとイタリア臭ぷんぷんのヴォーカルが、イタリア好きにはたまらない。
紙ジャケでもあるし、マニアなら買いでしょう。

前回買い逃した方、また「壺ジャケ」で発売です。今回私も買いました。また限定だと思いますので下の「扉ジャケ」と合わせてとりあえず買っておいた方が良いのではないでしょうか。内容はまだ聴いてないのでわかりません(笑).シールドを破る勇気がありません。聴き用にもう一枚買ったりして・・・
