   99年発表のデビュー・アルバム『ノー・エンジェル』に収録されていた「サンキュー」が、あのエミネムの「スタン」にサンプリングされ、一躍、話題の人となったロンドン出身の女性シンガー・ソングライター、ダイド。その後、シングル「ヒア・ウィズ・ミー」がテレビ・ドラマ「ロズウェル　星の恋人たち」の主題歌に使われ、ここ日本でもその神秘的なハイトーン・ヴォイスは広く知られるようになった。

   そんな彼女の2ndアルバムが本作。デビュー・アルバム発表後、精力的に続けてきたツアーで得るものが大きかったのだろう、前作のトリップホップと言うか、いまで言うエレクトロニカ主体のサウンドに、今回はアコースティックかつオーガニックな要素が加えられ、彼女の世界観が一気に広がった印象がある。そして、ときにサラ・マクラクランを思わせる美しい歌声には、やはり抗しがたい魅力がある。（山口智男）

この人の音楽は不思議だと思う。曲とかアレンジとかはシンプルでどちらかというとあっさりしている。声もしっとり落ち着いているけどちょっと寂しげで華やかな声だとは言いがたい。前作"No Angel"でドラマや映画、エミナムがらみでヒットした収録曲"Here with me"にしても"Thank You"にしても、異論はあるかもしれないけれど、単体の曲としてそう派手で目立つ曲とは私には思えない。
でも、はまる。何故か聞き入ってしまう。今回の"Life for Rent"もそう。シングルカットされてヒットしている曲もあるようだが、シングルカットされた曲も含めて、決して全体として華やかさを感じない。華がないのではなく、華が控えめな感じなのだ。一般的なソロの女性シンガーのアルバムが薔薇とか百合とか、蘭というイメージだとすれば、スミレという感じが一番近いかもしれない。だけど、そのスミレは手にとってみるとすごくいい香りがするスイートバイオレットだった。
ダイドの音楽は、そんな感じがする。しみじみと聴けて、繰り返し聞いても飽きがこない。
ところで、国内盤だけなのか、輸入盤もなのか分からないけれど、"See the Sun"の後、1分くらいのかなり長い空白をおいてシークレットトラックが入っていた。ブックレットにも日本語解説にも言及のない正真正銘シークレットトラック。2分半くらいの短い曲ながら、心に沁みる曲だったけれど、この曲、なんというタイトルなのだろう？

２０００年の秋に輸入盤の「NO　ANGEL」を手に入れた。それから間もなく日本でも大ヒット！彼女の美しくて悲しい、いろいろなイメージを沸かせてくれる歌はやっぱり世界中で受け入れられた。あの感動を再び！と思ってlife for rentを早速手に入れてみた。待ちに待った新作は相変わらずの優しい歌声。でも歌詞は不倫を歌った名曲DON'T THINK OF MEを思い起こさせるような意地悪な女の部分を出していたり、そして強い女の部分もあり。だけれど曲はあくまでも優しくて。正直言って前作のようなドラマチックなイメージはないけれど（前作はパーフェクトすぎたかも）、彼女の新譜を秋に再び聴くことができて幸せ。ダイドのアルバムを聴きながらドライブしたりピクニック行ったり、そして読書したり・・・至福の秋が迎えられそうです。

このアルバムを聞く時、とても悲しくなるし、切なくなるし、ホントに泣き出しそうになることがある。ダイドの声は私を素直にさせてくれる気がする。だから聞いてほしいです。
