イギリスのスウォンジーに拠点を置くダンス・ミュージック・ユニット、ハイブリッド。伝え聞くところによると、彼らは近年のエレクトロニック・ダンス・ミュージックがエモーショナルな要素を忘れがちなことを以前から嘆いているという。だが、この2人組のセカンド・アルバム『Morning Sci Fi』からは、人間的な感情やもろさのニュアンスがあまり伝わってこない。プログレッシヴ・ハウスの機械的なリズムを律儀なまでに保守しているため、悲しみ、怒り、高揚感といったものが入りこむ余地があまりないのだろう。ハイブリッドは、意図的にこのようなさめたサウンドをつくり出しているわけでは決してないのだ。
とはいえ、この「失敗」（彼らならそう見なすだろう）は良い方向に働いている。『Morning Sci Fi』は、ブレイクビーツ世代のアーティストが非人間的な未来に恐怖を感じながら生み出した未来派サウンドという感じを濃厚にただよわせているのだ。「Higher than a Skyscraper」、「We Are in Control」、「Steal You Away」といった強烈で威圧的なトラックは、そんな恐怖感が端的に現れたものだろう。サンクトペテルブルク・エルミタージュ管弦楽団による神秘的で忍び寄るようなストリングスは、ハイブリッドの不安げな表情を際立たせている。
また、実はニュー・オーダーのピーター・ハネットが弾いているベース（「True to Form」などで聴ける）や、かすかなインダストリアル調サウンド・エフェクト（たぶんマーティン・ハネットがジョイ・ディヴィジョンとの仕事でやったことに触発されたもの）は、『Morning Sci Fi』の残酷なまでに寒々しいサウンドスケープに心地よい緊張感を添えている。（Kevin Maidment, Amazon.co.uk）
