マハヴィシュヌ・オーケストラを率いるジョン・マクラフリンとサンタナを率いるカルロス・サンタナというまったく個性が異なるギタリスト2人によるコラボレーションアルバムです。1973年の作品。脇を固めるメンバーもビリー・コブハム、ヤン・ハマー、マイケル・シュリーヴ、ドン・アイリスと豪華なビッグネームが並びます。いわばマハヴィシュヌ・オーケストラとサンタナから一軍メンバーをそれぞれ供出した感じです。この2人の個性的なギタリストは一見するとまるで水と油の関係ですが、2人を結び付けているのが、コルトレーンの存在。「至上の愛」「ナイマ」をコラボレートすることによって偉大な巨星への敬意を払っています。

いまでこそ大物ミュージシャンのコラボは珍しくもありませんが、この作品が発表された1973年当時は、まさに画期的なエポックメイキングな出来事だったと想像されます。で、肝心の出来としては、マクラフリンが完全に牛耳ってしまい、サンタナの持ち味である官能のフレーズは封印されたままで終始しています。もとよりテクニックだけで言えばマクラフリンが圧倒的優位に立っていることは誰でも分かるのですが、同じ土俵に立って同じようなことをやろうとするのは始めから無理があります。したがって、最後までサンタナがここに存在する意味が分からないままです。

一方のマクラフリンも「火の鳥」あたりで感じられた輝きが薄らいでしまっていて、結局はビッグネームが顔を合わせました…というレベルで終わってしまっています。話題性としては破壊的なインパクトがありますが、果たして作品としてはどうなのかという点では冷静に判断したいものです。

名うてのギタリスト、ジョン・マクラフリンとサンタナでも、コルトレーンのカバーは無理だったか！「至上の愛」は、聴きやすい第１楽章だけで、肝心の３，４楽章が無ければ、意味無し！プロデューサーがマズったか？「ナイーマ」も残念ながら原曲を超えられない。これは、コルトレーンのカバーではなく、習作でしかない。しかし、この習作のお陰で、名作「ウェルカム」が出来たと思いたい。「ウェルカム」もコルトレーンのオリジナルだが、コルトレーン盤は、音がモヤモヤして（それが狙いなのですが）いるのに、サンタナは明瞭なギター音で、自分の音楽に出来ている。こちらは、あくまでも、習作という事で、聴きましょう。
