73年作品。前作でひとつの頂点を極めたサンタナが新メンバーと新たなる方向への脱皮を目指した5枚目のアルバム。本作直前に発表されたカルロスのソロ作『魂の兄弟たち』で共演したジョン・マクラフリンがゲスト参加、コルトレーン・ジャズ的なアプローチが随所に見られる。この頃からカルロスはヒンズー教の導師スリ・チンモイへ深く傾倒して行き、作品にもその影響が色濃く現れるようになる。
ボーナス・トラックは73年4月レコーディングの未発表曲「マントラ」を1曲追加収録

当時のアメリカ西海岸の音楽シーンを眺めてみれば、その中心の一人はやはりスライ・ストーンだろう。この１９７１年から７３年というのは「There is a riot goin' on」から「Fresh」への頃で、この頃の彼の音楽に象徴的に現れているようにドラッグ、酒、女、銃に完全に汚染されていた。しかし、その作品は皮肉にも終末的なデカダンスの美しさに彩られていた。ウッドストック、そして３枚のアルバムでロック・スターの座に上りつめたサンタナに
待っていたものもやはり頂上からいつ墜落するか分からぬ果てしないストレスとそれから逃れるための誘惑だったと思う。しかし、カルロスはその救いをジョン・コルトレーンやインドの
宗教に求めた。その宗教的な清新な雰囲気がこの１９７２年「Welcome」には溢れている。その宗教への傾倒は彼の多くのファンを去らせたかもしれないが、そのためにドラッグを拒否できたおかげでサンタナが今まで生き残った原動力となったと思う。このアルバムは音楽的にも、人生の面からいっても、カルロス・サンタナの美しい、勝利の記念碑だと思う。

「魂の兄弟たち」という習作を作ったお陰で、この名盤が生まれました。「ソウサリートのサンバ」のワクワクするリズム！「ウェルカム」の泣きのギター、ジャケットもシンプルで好感が持てます。ライナーノーツの翻訳が必要なければ、日本盤より安価なこちらをどうぞ。

キャラバンサライのすばらしさといったらLP時代に３回も
買い直したくらいですが、今まで未聴だったこいつも素晴らしかった
宗教色が胡散臭いのではと思って聴かず嫌いでしたが、正にこの路線
は現代でも通じます。
ジャズ界の重鎮もいっぱい参加してます。いろんな要素の詰まった
音楽の好きな、グローバルな貴兄は必携！
