同監督の「赤い靴」（東北新社のクラシックライブラリー）を初めて見た時を同じく、かなり昔の映画なのに物凄く「色彩」が豊かで幻想的だなぁと思いました。ＤＶＤの画質も昔の作品にしては良いと思います（気のせいかもしれませんが赤い靴の方が更に良い気もします）。

ベルイマンの「魔笛」（紀伊国屋）もドイツ語→スウェーデン語の翻訳版ですが、「ホフマン物語」はフランス語→英語翻訳版です、違和感は特に感じませんでした（赤い靴を見てこの監督たちの作品は英語と思っていた性かもしれません）。
特筆すべき仕様だと思うのですが（イマジカものには珍しい事ですが）、字幕が日本語だけでなく英語も選べます。

　Ｍ．パウエルとＥ．プレスバーガーは多くのジャンルの名画を作ったが､これはその代表。
第１話のオランピアにはモイラ・シアラーが踊っている。　当時とても若く、素質はマーゴ・フォンテーン以上と言う人もいたが、間もなく引退したのは惜しまれる。曽てのバレエ・リュスの名振付師
レオニード・マシーンも介添え的に少し踊っている。　年なのでこれは記録としては最後ではかかろうか。　後年イギリス・バレエ界の大御所となったフレデリック・アシュトンも制作に参加しており
文字通り歴史的作品である。
　第２話はホフマンの舟歌でまことに幻想的で、怪優ロバート・ヘルプマンが出演しており、怪しげな雰囲気をかもし出しよく出来ている｡
　二人の監督はこれ以前に「赤い靴」（モイラ・シアラー主演）を出している｡　そちらの方は話の筋があってそれなりに面白いが、芸術的にはこちらのほうが優れているようだ。
