   勝新太郎主演で知られる名作時代劇に、世界に冠する北野武監督が挑んだ話題作。今回、北野武＝ビートたけしが演じる盲目のあんま、座頭市は、なんと金髪。しかも仕込み杖は朱塗りというところがしゃれている。内容の方は、凄腕の人斬り服部源之助（浅野忠信）とおしの（夏川結衣）夫婦や、遊び人の新吉（ガダルカナルタカ）、そして美しい旅芸人姉妹などと市が出会い絡み合っていくというもので、注目の期待の殺陣シーンは十分合格点だが、特に浅野忠信の殺陣が実にお見事であった。
   総体的に、勝新太郎版をさほど彷彿させず、むしろコントもあれば歌も踊りもあるといった往年の娯楽時代劇を多分に意識した作りになっているのが成功のポイントだが、結果として時代劇と呼ぶよりも、むしろソード・アクション・エンタテインメントとでもいった雰囲気を醸し出しているのが、今の時代ならではというべきか。（的田也寸志）

賛否両論あるみたいですが単純に面白かったです。私は。

勿論、勝新の方が殺陣も速いし人情味もあるし
彼を超える座頭市を演じられる役者はいないと思う。

だが、たけしは初めから勝新を超えようなんて思っていないだろうし
敬愛する座頭市というキャラクターを使って
たけし流の「エンタティメント時代劇」を作りたかっただけなんだと思う。

CGを使った血しぶきも批判されてましたが
たけしはリアリズムなんてどうでもよかっただろうし
（座頭市が金髪ってところでそれぐらい分かるでしょ）
人を斬る悲哀とか葛藤なんて描く気はなかっただろうし

どこかのレビューで
「正義感のあるテロリストにしか見えなかった」というのがあったが
それこそたけしが描きたかった座頭市なんじゃないかと。
それでいいんじゃないかと。

ただ、回想シーンが多すぎたのが減点１
そんな過去があったんだろうなと観客に薄々思わせる脚本だったら
もっと脇役が光ったかもと。
ま、たけし以外が光る必要もないか。

勝新太郎の座頭市を巧みに料理した全く別物の作品。

あえて台詞を使わず俳優の動作で場面設定を表現させる技法、俳優の動作と音楽が少しずつ重なっていく技法、次場面に移るまでの数秒をわざと長く映し続ける技法などは古典的な方法だけど北野作品はうまく使いこなしていると思う、実際本作品でも多用している。
ここまでエンターテインメントに徹してくれれば、観ていて気持ちがいい。

勝さんのも見ましたが
たけしさん版では
金髪とタップがどんな効果をもたらすのか
すごく興味深かったです。

白髪でもカッコよかったかなとも
思いましたが白髪だと
老けすぎてしまったかもしれないし
金髪という発想には脱帽です。

タップシーンは祭の演出で
この高揚感が本当に分かるのは
日本人の特権だなぁとも思いました。
