ハイスクール時代にウイントン・マルサリスと出会ったことがきっかけでジャズに傾倒したという若手ピアニスト、エリック・リードの新作。洗練された彼のプレイをロン・カーターらベテランが支える。

かつてウィントンのもとでガチンガチンに鍛えられたエリック・リード(p)だが、やっぱり今でもガチンコ直球勝負の“新主流派ジャズ”を聴かせてくれるわけだ。気兼ねなく弾きまくるハードコアな姿は勇ましくもある。そんな今どき珍しいくらいの骨太ピアノ・トリオ盤だが、収録曲はまったく珍しくないスタンダード。でもこれも正解。怒髪天をつくような「ジャンゴ」「ソーサラー」「ティー・フォー・トゥー」にはヤラレました。それにしても本気モードのロン・カーター(b)は久しぶりだな。そこがこの好盤の肝かもしれない。 (新所いしよ) --- 2003年09月号

エリック・リードは中庸のピアニストである。ヨーロッパの白人耽美派の「弱さ」はないが、黒人の「濃さ」もほどほど。そこがいい。曲はバド・パウエルの「クレオパトラの夢」「ラウンド・ミッドナイト」「ワルツ・フォー・デビー」などスタンダードの名曲がザクザク。ビル・エヴァンスの印象が強すぎる「ワルツ・フォー・デビー」もエリック・リードの手にかかると、エヴァンスほど耽美的でなく適度な力強さを持った曲になる。ロン・カーター、アル・フォスターのベースとドラムのよさは、いまさら、である。録音もいい。（松本敏之）
