   家族のぬくもりを求めて止まない貧しい少年が、普通の家族の生活を手に入れるために、ヤクザな世界に身を落としていく姿がリアリティたっぷりに描かれる。彼の行動のすべてが、ただ母の愛を取り戻したいという思いだけ…というのが泣かせる。熱い思いが空回りしてしまう15才の切なく虚しい青春の姿を描いたのはケン・ローチ監督。英国の労働者階級の過酷な現実をベースに、そこで生きる人々の人生を、ときには厳しく、ときには暖かな眼差しで切り取っていくローチ。本作は、そんなローチ作品の中でも最高傑作といわれ、2002年カンヌ映画祭脚本賞を受賞した。（斎藤 香）

5.0 out of 5 stars しっかりと寄り添うことの凄さ, 2004/10/18
　ケン・ローチ作品を観ると大抵、やり切れなさをおぼえる。今回もまたローチは、イギリス労働者階級の「救いがたい現実」を誠実に切り取った。彼の徹底したリアリズムは、この「救いがたさ」を救ってはくれない。
　だが、安易に手を差し伸べることは、真の意味で救いにはならない。ケン・ローチが私たちに示しているのは、映画人としての彼が唯一なしうることにほかならないだろう。すなわち、この現実を見棄てることなく、むしろしっかりとそれに寄り添う、ということだ。いつもながらの突き放したようなラストも、ローチから私たちへのメッセージと受け取りたい。「目をそらさず、ともにあってほしい」と。

個人的には早く全作品をDVD化してもらいたい、英国映画界の重鎮ケン・ローチ監督の作品。特に69年の傑作「ケス」と同じく16歳の少年を主人公にしたものだというので期待してみました。最高傑作かどうかはひとまず置いておくとしても（「ケス」を越えるのは難しい気が）十分に素晴らしい映画でした。オーディションで発掘したというリアム役の少年も、とてもいい仕事をしていますね。

痛みを感じることなしには見れない映画です。崩壊した家庭、ドラッグなどこれらは個人的な問題でもあるんだけれども、社会的な背景をもった問題でも或るわけですね。それらの問題を、あくまで個人の視点から見た悲喜劇として描くところがこの監督の真骨頂なのでしょう。悲惨な話の中にもどこかアップリフティングな気持ちが!わき起こるのを感じるのですが、それは監督の中に、主人公たちの人間性に対する大きな信頼のようなものがあるから、のように思います。

余談ですが、英語はスコティッシュ訛りが強烈です（笑）。
