カリスマ・レーベルのジェネシスのボーカリスト、ピーター・ガブリエルはその圧倒的な才能にもかかわらず世間の認知はとても低かった。その彼がブレイクしたのがこのアルバム。スレッジハンマーが全米No.1になったときの驚きは今も忘れません。必聴盤。

１９８６年プリンスの「パレード」と双璧を成す名盤だ。何度聴いても飽きない。ピーターガブリエルが初めてコマーシャルにヒットしたアルバムである。（１）「RED RAIN」はドラムのシンバルとベースで雨の雰囲気を出してる。全米大ヒット曲（２）「SLEDGEHAMMER」と（７）「BIG TIME」はソウルフルロックと言える。圧巻なのは（４）「THAT VOICE AGAIN」だ。こんなテンポの曲があるのか？と思うほどアレンジが凝りまくってる曲。

このアルバムは普段J-POPしか聴いてない人に薦めますね。今のJ-POPなんかよりもっと新しいことやってるんだから・・・。SACDで発売してるらしいからそれもゲットーしたいんですが、２０００年の紙ジャケリマスター版は購入しました。このアルバムはCDで３枚。LPで１枚持ってます。中古CD屋で５００円くらいで売ってると、つい買ってしまう。発売以来１８年間継続的に聴いてる。食べ物に例えるなら寿司のようなアルバムだ。

ピーターの大ヒット作ですが、参加メンバーが豪華でケイト・ブッシュをはじめ、スチュアート・コープランド、ジム・カー、ユッスウ・ンドゥルなどが名を連ねています。サウンドは前作よりも聴きやすいかもしれません。（個人的には前作が大好きなのですが）おすすめは（１）とライブのハイライトで歌われる事の多い（９）です。（ちなみにリリース当時と曲順がかわっていますが、この曲順のほうが良いと思います）
結構、洗練されていて当時は賛否両論ありましたが好盤だとおもいます。
