演奏についてはコルトレーンの最高傑作の一つであることには間違いない。このＣＤはヴァンゲルダーがリマスターを行っているのが大きな特徴である。録音評をしてみると、私の持っている1987年盤では細身で、エネルギー感に乏しくテナー、ピアノ、ドラムの分離が悪く音の粒立ちがない。COMPLTE IMPULSE STUDIO RECORDINGS 1998年版は２０ビットリマスターがされているものの、テナーの音がエッジの立った音で本来のコルトレーンの音ではない。さて今回のCDはEMIのロンドンの地下室で見つかったオリジナルマスターテープと同世代のテープでリマスターしたことである。至上の愛が生まれ変わってしまった。至上の音質で。

個人的には、オーネット・コールマンの「ゴールデン・サークル VOL.1」、エリック・ドルフィーの「アウト・トゥ・ランチ」と並ぶ60年代フリー系3大アルバムの一枚。
このCDの特筆すべきは音質。このアルバムのマスターテープは長い間行方不明になっていたのが（このアルバムだけでなく、インパルスのマスターテープの多くが行方不明だそうです）、最近ロンドンで発見されたそうです。そのオリジナルマスターを使ってRVGがリマスタリングしたのだから、これまさに「鬼に金棒」ですね。もの凄い音です！オリジナルアナログ盤といい勝負です。そしてこの値段だから、オーディオに興味のあるかたは買い替えても損はしません。

1964年12月9日録音。1967年7月17日、この2年半後にジョン・コルトレーンが死ぬなどと誰が予想できただろう。人の一生は分からないものだ。ただ不滅と言われた彼のカルテットもこのアルバムを最後に崩壊が始まる。1965年にはマッコイ・タイナーが退団、1966年にはエルビン・ジョーンズが退団する。そしてコルトレーンは死の最後の日まで変容を続けていく。そういう意味で本作は不滅の(とは言ってもわずか3年間の)コルトレーン・カルテットの最後のアルバムである。

コルトレーンはこのアルバムを『神への小さな捧げもの』と呼んだ。インド哲学に傾倒し、世界のあらゆる宗教に入り込んでいくコルトレーンは、自らの音楽追及と分かちがたくなる。そしてある時、突然身体の内部に音楽が充満するという不思議な体験をする。これが至上の存在への献曲への制作につながったのだ。制作にあたってはカバラの本の知識が使われたと言われている。

『ア・ラブ・シュプリーム』というフレーズは19回繰り返される。1は孤独であり、9は宇宙である。すなわち19は宇宙を前にした一人の創造的な人間を意味する。さらには、1と9を足した10は神の顕現を示していると言われている。
この宗教と一体化したコルトレーンにマッコイ・タイナーとエルヴィン・ジョーンズは離れ、ファラオ・サンダースは引き寄せられる。その世界観を『不滅』のカルテットで表現しえた最後のアルバムである。
