ダークネスの『Permission to Land』は、かつてのポンプロックへの臆面もなく娯楽的な回帰だ。それはニルヴァーナ以前、マレット・ヘアの群れが世界のスタジアムに足を延ばし、フランネルシャツを着た大げさにまじめな同類たちが、世界を風靡（ふうび）した時代だ。つまり、周囲がピクシーズ、ソニック・ユース、ストーン・ローゼスなどにインスピレーションを得ている間、ダークネスの4人はクィーンやデフ・レパードのアルバムを研究して、ロックのしかたを学んでいたのだ。
彼らのデビューアルバム『Permission to Land』を際立たせているのは、この物怖じしないロックンロール・スピリットだ（とりあえず2003年の時点ではそういえる。前進するためには時に振り返らなければならない）。ベッドルームのエレクトロニカ、アコースティック・シューレアリスム、ガレージ・ロックといったものは、ここにはない。かわりにあるのは、積み上げたマーシャルのアンプ、11にチューンナップされたギター、花火などがぴったりの、ピュアなエンターテインメントとしての音楽だ。「I Believe in a Thing Called Love」「Growing on Me」「Get Your Hands off My Woman」などのシングル曲は、すべてその典型だ。大々的なギターリフ、すさまじいドラム、ジャスティン・ホーキンスの過度のファルセットヴォーカル。目立つ曲はまだ他にもある。「Black Shuck」「Givin' Up」「Love on the Rocks (with No Ice)」には、みんなで歌えるコーラスとギタリスト、ダン・ホーキンスの超感染力の強いフックがつまっていて、ついこぶしを振り上げたくなる。
独創的かといえばノー。アイロニックかといえばそうかも。楽しいかといえば、間違いなくイエス。下手なバンドであれば、このようなスパンデクスをまとったロックには、完全なおふざけとしてのアプローチをとっただろう。ダークネスが『Permission to Land』に誠実さをもって取り組んだことは、永遠の評価に値する。だって、そうしない理由などないではないか。考えてみればいつだって楽しそうにやっているのはボン・ジョビの方だ。ニルヴァーナよりもずっと。（Robert Burrow, Amazon.co.uk）
