薄ら寒く、華やかさに欠け、時としてひどく陰気な本作『On the Beach』は、ニール・ヤングが『Harvest』以降に発表した最初のスタジオ・アルバムだ。2年前の『Harvest』で一躍メインストリームのスーパー・スターとなったヤングは、本作でキャリアの方向転換を試みた。それは「風に向かって放尿する」ようなものだった――ヤングの人生観が表れた、本作の歌詞中もっとも有名な文句のひとつを借りて言うなら、そういうことになる。
ヤングはすでに苦悩に満ちたアルバム『Tonight's the Night』の録音を済ませていた。60年代のドラッグ・カルチャーとその被害に対する彼なりの告発といえる作品である。だが、レコード会社からは内容が暗すぎるという理由で却下された。そこでヤングは、代わりに本作を会社側に提示したのだ。暗さは減退したが、それでも聴いた後に尾を引きそうなこのアルバムは、ひと言でいえば、ロック・スターという地位やカウンターカルチャーのてん末に対するヤングの拒絶宣言だ。取り上げられる話題は多岐にのぼり、リチャード・ニクソンとパティ・ハーストのこと（大曲「Ambulance Blues」）、ヤングと女優キャリー・スノッドグラスとの関係（「Motion Pictures」）のほか、もっとも有名なところでは、チャールズ・マンソン（見事な「Revolution Blues」）のことも語られる（マンソンが人気トピックになるのは何年も後のこと）。一方、「Vampire Blues」では、これらすべての話題に触れつつ、ヤング自身のことが歌われているようだ。『On the Beach』は深い絶望とわずかな希望に彩られたアルバムだが、ロック・カルチャーの生んだ傑作として徐々に再評価されるようになるだろう。（Bill Holdship, Amazon.com）
