　本来であれば、アポロ７号で指令船と機械船の実験をし、８号では、月着陸船の地球軌道での実験を行うはずだった。しかし、月着陸船の完成が遅れ、その役割は、９号に廻される。クリスマスに予定されていた８号の役割は中途半端ではあったが、ある意味凄い形になった。
　指令船と機械船だけで月の周回軌道に乗るというものである。
　月着陸船は、後のアポロ１３号の事故のときにもその役割を果たしたように万一の場合の補助的な側面を持っている。だから、これ無しで、月に行くというのは、バックアップのない極めてリスクの多いプランであったといえよう。
　その全貌が、克明に記録されており、当時中学２年生であった元科学少年には、お宝映像満載である。
　ボーマン船長の「創世記」の朗読については、後日他の宗教からクレームがついたようであるが、同時進行で見ていた私は、キリスト教徒ではないが、妙にぴったりしていたという記憶がある。

　ともあれ、凄い映像ばかりで驚く。

アポロ8号は本来、LEM（月着陸船）を搭載し、地球軌道上での
LEMの試運転を行なうミッションの予定だった。

しかしLEMの納期の遅れから、急遽月を周回して戻ってくるミッションが
組まれたのが、このアポロ8号である。このミッションがなければ、
もしかしたら人類初の月面に立った人物は、アームストロングではなく
ピート・コンラッド（12号船長）だったのかもしれない。
このミッションに参加した3人は、人類で初めて月の裏側を見た人物となった。

このミッションでは、司令機械船のみで事故の際のフォローもなく、
何かあった場合（月軌道から脱出できない等）には永遠に宇宙をさまよう運命が待っていた。
そのため、宇宙飛行士の一人が保険に入ろうとしたが断られたという。

映像は古く粗いものの、当時の雰囲気が充分に伝わってくる。
Earthrise（地球の出）のシーンは最後に少しだけなので、
ちょっと不満が残るものの、それを見たときの飛行士たちの
やりとりには興奮する。

尚、アポロ計画では、トム･ハンクス制作総指揮のTVドラマ
「From the earth to the moon」がある。
8号のエピソードでは、宇宙船内の飛行士たちのセリフは
このDVDに残されている通りのものが、多く使われている。
