Strange on paper maybe but an open-topped car stereo's dream, 'Twice' is the sound of West Coast American surfer kids obsessed with 80's English guitar pop. The summer pop album of 2003, 'Twice' sees LA's The Tyde - Darren Rademaker (vocals, guitar), Ann Do (keyboards), Benjamin Knight (guitar), Ric Menck (drums), Brent Rademaker (bass) - marry the crystalline romanticism of early Cherry Red bands like Felt & Fantastic Something with shimmering cross-harmonized Byrdsian-guitars. 'Twice' was recorded at Visionquest Studios by Robert Campanella with additional help from Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre) & Hunter Crowley (Warlocks). Includes the single 'Go Ask Yer Dad' & 'Blood Brothers' from the EP of the same name. 11 tracks. Rough Trade.

ビーチウッド・スパークスのメンバー
ブレント＆ダーレンのレイドメイカー兄弟を中心とする
L.A.インディーズ・シーンのストレンジ・ポップバンド。
本作は、ラフ・トレード移籍後第一弾となる2ndアルバム。
本作より、ヴェルヴェット・クラッシュのドラマー
リック・メンクが正式加入している。

彼らの魅力は
なんといってもレトロなテイスト溢れるサウンドだろう。

60's-70's-80'sのサウンドをブレンドして
遊び心いっぱいに、くずしてみせる。
そのストレンジ加減が絶妙で
まさにポップ・ミュージックを
自在にサーフィンするかのような趣きだ。

荒めのエフェクターのかかったヴォーカル、
アーシーなオルガン、はじけるローズ・ピアノ、
ジャングリーなギターワーク。
そのどれもがきらきらと輝き、
ジャケットのような西海岸でサーフィン
という風景を想起させるが、
微妙にねじれて、サイケデリックの煙に巻く。
ブレント＆ダーレンのマニアックなPOP職人ぶりが
素晴らしい。

ヴェルヴェット・クラッシュ、
スリルズのファンはもとより
POPミュージックを愛する
全てのロック・ファンにおすすめしたい、
ナイスなアルバムです。

元「Further」のBrent Rademakerがバンド解散後に結成したバンドで、彼も含むんですが、モダン・オルタナ・カントリー・ユニット「Beachwood Sparks」のメンバーともダブる３人組ユニットの、これは２枚目にあたるアルバムとなります。おもいっきりナツ！なジャケットから「Beach Boys」ライクなサウンドを連想しますが、それはちょっと違ってて、アコースティック・ギターのフォーキーなサウンドと、ラップ・スティール等をフューチャーしたカントリー・テイスト溢れるサウンド指向．．．とここまでは「Beachwood Sparks」のラインを踏襲するものではあるのですが、変にザラザラと歪んでいる所なんかは初期「Sebadoh」や「Guided By Voices」あたりのＬｏ-ｆｉテイストがあり、７０年代風なオルガンをフューチャーした曲なんかは初期「Pink Floyd」までも彷彿とさせるようなサイケデリック・サウンドまでもフォローしています。でも全編に漂う雰囲気は８０年代のブリティッシュ・バンド、例えば「Felt」あたりを連想させると言っても過言ではない冷笑的でクールな空気を感じる事が出来たりします。基本はフォークなれど結構ナゾの多いサウンド。「Beachwood Sparks」もそうでしたが、レトロな時代錯誤サウンドのようで実はこれも「イマ」の作品だって感じもします。いずれにせよ、傑作です！

今作ではドラマーがVelvet CrushのRic Menckに変わっている。前作と比べると、穏やかな光が乱反射するまばゆいサイケデリアは薄まったものの、リスナーの脳裏に間違いなく西海岸の風景を浮かび上がらせるカントリーポップ風味のメロディーセンスは一気に開花した感があり、Byrdsの影響も垣間見えるジャングリーなギターワークと、キーボード/ラップスティ-ル/パーカッションの軽快な響きが生み出す明るく力強いサウンドは、まさしく夏のサウンドトラック（特に様々な表情を見せるキーボードが素晴らしい！）。日差しが降り注ぐ浜辺でツイストする人々の姿が目に浮かぶパーティーチューン"Shortboard City"や、Darren Readmakerの渋い声とFeltにも通じるシニカルな雰囲気が印象的な、Tyde流ロックチューン"Blood Brothers"、ソウルフルなハモンドオルガンとセクシーなボーカルがToploaderを彷彿とさせる"Takes a Lot Of Tryin'"なんかが特に良い感じ。Thrillsが売れるのなら、このバンドももっと注目されてもおかしくないのになぁと思います。リリースはラフトレードから。
