デビュー作(CDエクストラ付き)。ザ・キンクス((2)は堂々とリフを拝借)、スモール・フェイセズ、ザ・フーなど、イギリスのバンドそっくり。情報なしで聴いたらスウェーデン出身だとはわからないだろう。歌詞は英語で、ジャケットの顔見ても役に立たないし……。


内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)

ガレージ・リヴァイバル・ブームが続くなか、その一端を担うスウェーデンからまたイキのいいグループが登場した。この1作目以前にもその実力のほどは4月に行なわれた初来日公演で証明ずみ(ハイヴスへの敵対心と、ビッグ・マウスぶりも)。そして本作では、青白く燃え上がるパッションをモッドでサイケデリックなバンド・グルーヴに封じ込めている。とはいうものの、少なからずまだ未知数な部分が存在するのもまた事実。逆にブームが終わった1年後、未完の大器がどこまで成長しているかに注目したいと思う。 (兒玉常利) --- 2003年07月号

スウェーデンのバンドMando Diao（マンドゥ・ディアオ）の2003年6月に発売された1stアルバム。

ポップかつアップテンポで、しっかりしたメロディを歌えて、おまけにビッグマウス、そしてグッドルックスという事で、おおよそ一般的な名ロックバンドのポイントはおさえたバンドである。

中心メンバーはグスタフ・ノリアン（Vo/G)とビヨルン・ディクスウォット（Vo/G)の二人。
性格や声質がまったく異なるタイプの2人がそれぞれがそれぞれの作った曲を歌うスタイル。
作曲はそれぞれなのに楽曲のクレジットには「ディクスウォット/ノリアン」としているあたりは、ビートルズの「レノン/マッカートニー」への意識が充分に感じ取れる。
実際に彼等はビートルズ愛をまったく隠していない。

これだけタイプが違う二人がよくまとまったもんだと感心させられるほど、二人が書く曲のタイプは異なる。
それが一辺倒ではないセンスを感じさせる。
実際の演奏が若干下手なのは気になったが、おそらく時が解決してくれるだろう．．．。

一番好きな曲はダントツでグスタフが歌う「Sheepdog」。
iTunesで★を5個付けちゃってる勢いである。
次はビヨルンが歌う「Mr Moon」。
バラードだがビヨルンの声にピッタリの渋い曲。
この2曲がこのアルバムを象徴しているのではないだろうか？

いずれにしてもデビューアルバムとしては珠玉の出来だと思う。

本人たちはビートルズ至上主義な発言をし、実際音にもそれが現れてはいるが、そのファッションセンスが物語るようにモッズの匂いも濃厚。モータウンが好きなようなのでそのせいだろう。

６０年代風でありながら、若者らしさも溢れるナンバーで構成されたこのアルバム。いきなりアップテンポのロックで始まり、その後も軽快なロックンロールとゆったりしたバラードが小気味よく続いていく。２人のタイプの違うヴォーカリストの曲が同じ数入っていて、曲の順番も良く考えられている。決して飽きることはない。

全体的に昔のレコードの頃の音源を新しくデジタルリマスターしたような音質。特に<８>は古い音源を聴いているときに持つような違和感を感じる。

成熟したポップス(大衆音楽)としてのロックンロールを聴いて育ち、それらをこよなく愛しているのが曲を聴いていて伝わってくる。技術的にはうまいとは言えないのだが、楽曲自体は質の高いものであり、そのギャップもまた面白い。
なんだか応援したくなるバンド。この先がまだまだ楽しみだ。

因みにジャケ写左端のメンバーはこのアルバムを出した後に脱退し、現在のメンバーは４人。

今年3rdが出たスウェーデン出身の直球ロックバンドの2003年リリースの1stです。個人的にこの年の来日LIVEでも彼等には酔いしれたので、こんなに前のめりに剛直球なロックもとにかく久しぶりでした。ご存知R&Rリヴァイヴァルの波がきてた頃ですね。
出会いは以外にもルックスというか、カッコ良さを語るに十分な名盤にふさわしいジャケ買い。モッズ成分に反応しました。特にメインヴォーカルをとるビヨルンとグスタフが、現在進行形でジョンレノンが2人もいるバンドと称したいくらい、鼻血ぶーなカッコ良さ。
作品の完成度という意味では現在出してる3枚では、この1stが一番。次いで3rd＞越えられない壁＞＞＞2ndという感じ。2ndから3rd出るまでは「あのバンドは今・・・」になりやしないかとひやひやしたもんです。MANDO DIAOの原点にして、UK寄りの剛直球ロックファンにはたまらない内容の傑作となっておりますんで、まだの方は今からでも是非聴いてみて下さい。
