内容紹介

20世紀末、日本の合唱団が、イギリスのラターという余り有名でない作曲家の「レクィエム」をしばしば歌うようになりました。今やこの曲はすっかり定着、「ピエ・イエズ」などはヒーリングの定番の地位を確保。作曲技法は極めて平易で、ゴスペル、ミュージカルなど同時代の音楽の影響を受けつつ、決して通俗に堕すことがないのだから、愛されて当然です。当盤はラター自身がプロデュース(交通事故で若くして亡くなった息子に捧げられました)、作曲者ゆかりの合唱団で今や歌唱の美しさでは敵なしの聖歌隊を起用。「レクィエム」では録音が珍しいアンサンブル・バージョン(オルガンの暖かいサウンドが涙物)の採用、美しいアンセムや珍しいオルガン曲の収録に、マニアも満足です。

　最近、少しはメジャーになりつつあるイギリスの現代作曲家ジョン･ラターの代表作「レクイエム」と宗教作品、オルガン小品まで収録された内容の濃いアルバムです。（ちなみにこのアルバムはラター自身がプロデュースしており、事故で若くして亡くなった愛息に捧げられました。）
「フォーレやデュレフレの精神で作曲した。」と作曲者自身も語っているように「レクイエム」はフォーレの系譜につながる美しい作品です。ゴスペルやポップ･ミュージックを消化しながらも決して通俗的にならず、優しく耳に響く音楽は近年評価を高めており他のレーベルでも録音されています。その他のアンセムも平易な語法で書かれており難解な音楽ではありません。
このアルバムで特筆すべきは演奏の素晴しさです。ナクソスでお馴染みの合唱のケンブリッジ･クレア･カレッジ聖歌隊は期待どうりの美しさですし、ソプラノのエリン・マナハン・トーマスが非常に清楚な歌声で好感が持てます。オルガンとアンサンブルも暖かいサウンドで合唱をサポートしています。紙ケース付きのジャケットもシンプルですがいい感じです。
