映画の冒頭、アフリカの原野を自転車で走る映像に被せられる音楽がいかにもアフリカ土俗の響きと調べであり、見ている人間に「うん、アフリカだ」と納得させてしまうつくりですね。

正直、新鮮味はないのですが映画のつくりと同様にどっしりとした感があって、いかにもドイツ映画という気がします。

作家のシュテファン＝ツヴァイクは司馬遼太郎や赤川次郎などにも影響を与えたといわれる、時代を生きる人たちの一瞬の煌きを描くことで定評のある実力派作家でした。
この映画はその原作の丁寧な映画化であり、音楽だけでなく脚本、役者の演技にいたるまで非常に愛を込めて作られています。

アフリカという地で暮らすユダヤ人家族の一生を描いた作品ですが、ホロコーストの匂いというものは少なく、こ!の種の映画では異質の部類に入ると思います。
子役の女の子とアフリカの原住民である料理人が交わす親愛の情が見所ですが、それ以外にも結構いろんな波乱があります。
サントラもそれを反映してますね。

それにしても子役の子はかわいかった。とても素直な演技ができていたと思います。ちなみに、衝撃作「シティ・オブ・ゴッド」を抑えてアカデミー賞外国語映画部門賞を獲得した映画です。
