ニューヨーク出身の４人組バンド「Interpol（インターポール）」の1stアルバム。

エコー&ザ・バニーメンやジョイ・ディヴィジョンといった80年代のニューウェイブ系の音楽が引き合いにだされる事が多い。
当人達も完全否定する気はないだろう。
でも、誰々の真似をしたら必ずしもいい音楽になるか？といえば決してそういう訳でもなく、そのバンドが持つ雰囲気やオリジナリティがあるからこそ惹かれる面がある訳で。
音楽が当たり前の様に巷に流れている以上、その影響をまったく受けないというのは不可能な訳で。
だとすればニューウェイブ云々だけで語るのはナンセンスかな、と。

このアルバム「Turn on the Bright Lights」に関しては、1曲目の「Untitled」のイントロのアルペジオが奏でる不穏な響きからリズム隊が入ってくる部分を聞いただけで一発で惹かれてしまった。
そして2曲目の「Obstacle 1」では一転してテンポアップし不穏な気持ちを安心に変えてくれる。この曲のサビ部分のリズムは大好きだ。
こういった様に、このアルバムは独特の憂鬱感を放ちながら、同時に開放感を感じる事もできるという二面性を備えている。
それが、ある意味で人間らしいといえば人間らしい行為である。

アメリカで彼らのライブにいったとき、彼らの持つ壮大さに圧倒されてそれ以来チェックしている。彼らを聴くとロックの洗練された新しい形を見ている気がする。それは、ほかのバンドも何度か試みているのだけど、彼らほど自分たちの方向性とスタイルがうまく一致しているやつらは少ない。スタイルはだいぶ違うけど、SMITHS好きな人は気に入ると思うな。
