もちろん水の戯れも良いしその他の曲も良いです。たっぷりの響かせ、たっぷりと歌ったラヴェルです。ピアニッシモはかすれず、フォルティッシモは破れない、こういうのをたっぷりとした響きである、と教えられます。フランソワのスケールの大きさに涙するばかりです。
　１９６０年代前半で、フランソワの体調がおかしくなる前の録音なので、テクニックにも破綻がないように思われます。厳密な意味で、というより、あら捜しすればそれはわかりませんが、私にはフランソワに関してはそういうことは不必要だと思っています。
　全集の１では、あえて『鏡』をお勧めいたします。第一曲『蛾』の第一音のなんと丁寧な響きでそのまま引き込んでくれることか。ギーゼキングのさらさらしすぎた弾き方とは違います。『道化師の朝の歌』では、三連符のところではテンポを動かしてはいますが、それが却ってせかせかしない動きというものを表現していて、これもフランソワの世界に引き込まれてしまいます。その他、聴き所はいっぱいあります。
　ただし、いくつかあるフランソワ名物の内の一つ、譜読みの間違いは第一曲にも健在でした。再現部の約１１小節くらい前の小節で、左手ＡＳ-ＡＳの八分音符の分散オクターブを、その一オクターブ半上のＦ-Ｆと弾いているのです。どうやら、ヘ音記号を見落としたのかな？？さもなければ、フランソワの使用楽譜にはト音記号のままだったのか、それとも、「作曲家」フランソワの感興がそのように弾いてしまったのか、謎です。この点を赦せない方は、この演奏の評価は低く見積もると思います。私はこのことで、曲の流れを阻害されませんでした。だから星が５つになってしまうのです。
　フランソワの幻想の世界をお楽しみください。

　マルグリット・ロン最後の高弟，サンソン・フランソワは，前世紀半ばに活躍した名手。酒と煙草を愛し，録音の殆どは一発録り。気が乗らないと聴くにたえない演奏を平気でするムラッ気の多さを持ち合わせた，天衣無縫な気質の持ち主であった。そんな生活が災いして短命に終わった上，晩年の演奏にはロレツの回らなくなった酷いものも多い。それでもなお，彼のピアノがひときわ燦然と輝いて見えるのは，その破天荒な生き様そのままの，精気に富んだ即興的なピアニズムの故であり，まさにこの点において，彼の演奏は【天才】と呼ぶに相応しい，霊的な魔力を備えたものであった。『クープランの墓』冒頭の「前奏曲」に聴ける，絶妙という以外にいかなる形容も拒否するアゴーギクは，もはや音符では再現不可能な代物。ますます専門化し，丁寧に譜読みする余り生気を失ったラヴェルが溢れる現在，例えそのムラッ気と冒険的な曲解釈のゆえに総合点において星ひとつ減ろうとも，彼のラヴェルは永遠に輝きを失うことはないだろう。
