色んな意味で、残念です。私自身が、しっかりと、このアルバムに正面から向き合わなかった事、今更ながらに大きな反省点です。レコード会社がしっかりとサポートしかったにせよ、Hot Street 以降のバンドの転身が私自身、好きでなかったにせよ、もう少し向き合うべきだと反省しました。全体を通しての曲も、決して、悪くはない。バンドの低迷期にあたった為と言ってしまえば、それまですが、聞き返すと、それなりに、感慨深いものがあります・・・、このアルバム以降、このバンドは、再び、稼動し、奇跡の復活とも言える活動を開始し、新たなファンを獲得する前の「夜明け」前的のアルバム。もっと、向き合うべきだった・・・ピーター全面に出したものだけれども、悪くはない。これと向き合わないまま、或は、通りすぎてしまったファンの皆様、向き合ってみましょう！私のように・・・

シカゴとしてはこの次の「シカゴ１６」で、サポートメンバーでつぎはぎして来て
空席のままだったギタリストの座にビル・チャンプリンが入り、
その流れでデヴィッド・フォスターのプロデュースによるピーター・セテラの唄う
「素直になれなくて」の大ヒットでバラード・バンドのイメージが成立して
今に至っているのですが、今作はその「１６」の前作にあたり
（シカゴの通算１５枚めは中途半端なグレイテスト・ヒッツ盤でした）、
まだ、バンドにテリー・キャスの亡きあとのシカゴの方向性に迷っているような感じも聴き受けます。
ロバート・ラムは「マニュピレイション」「憧れのリッチマン（I'd rather rich）」の
ヴォーカル２曲にピーターと共作の「アポン・アライヴァル」で存在感を見せていますが、
今作は圧倒的に、「ソング・フォー・ユー」や「バースディ・ボーイ」など
バラードの名手ピーターの独壇場となり、今作が出た８０年当時の、米国西海岸バンドの
AORへの移り変わりも多分に感じられます。
レコードで言うM-5までのA面にはしっとり目の曲が並びますが、B面にあたるM-6以降は
新たな試みと言いますか、「オーヴァーナイト・カフェ」「サンダー＆ライトニング」
「アメリカン・ドリーム」に象徴されるようなAORサウンドの導入をこの段階から積極的に行っています。
トム・ダウドがプロデュースをしているのですが、とても良くまとめていると思いますし、
硬軟自在な音の取り合わせに思えて、まったく駄作ではありません。
ただ、古きファンからは非難ゴウゴウ、新しいファンにとっては垂涎の「シカゴ１６」は、
この「シカゴ１４」を聴くと、こうなるべくしてなったのだな、という感想は出てきます。
内容が良いのに売れなかったのは、シカゴという「ブラス・ロック・バンド」の
時代の賞味期限切れだったのか、単にこの指紋のジャケットが地味なせいだったのか。。。

RHINOの良質なリマスター盤、ボーナスにはロバートの曲２曲とジェームズ・パンコウの曲が
収録、こちらも良いです。
