　78年にデビューしてきた頃は「レゲエ」「パンク」と当時のミュージックシーンを席巻していたムーヴメントを利用してのし上がり、その後はあっさりとこうしたスタイルを捨ててしまったポリス。ロックが持つ青臭さとは無縁の「したたかさ」が嫌味なバンドでもある。しかし表現を変えれば「どのようなスタイルでも最高の音楽が作れる」という証であり、その自信が「数年うちにビートルズを抜くよ」という不遜とも思えるセリフにつながっていたのだろう。
　このジャケットのユングの本を持つ写真は衒学趣味で鼻につくが、ここで聴ける音楽の完成度の高さにはそんな感想は吹き飛ばされてしまう。凄まじく複雑なコード進行・リズムも全くそれと感じさせないほど自然にまとめられている。個人的には一番好きなポリスのアルバムはファーストだが、このアルバムがバンドの最高傑作であり、ロックの到達した一つの金字塔であるのは間違いない。

ポリス・ミュージックの完成型として、最初から最後まで、一点のスキもなし。
語りたいことを全て書こうとしたら800字に到底おさまりますまい。
クールなギター、高い音楽性、精緻なドラミングワーク。
３人の最高のテクニックをもって、内面表現から現代社会への
アイロニーまで、色々なメッセージをドラマティックに聴かせてくれます。
#7,#8はビッグヒットなので勿論ですが、#6,#10の完成度には
20年以上たった今でも、誰も追いつけていません。

このアルバムの最初のシングル（７）「EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE」のビデオを初めて観た時の衝撃というか、感動はそれまで味わったことのない感覚だった。

コンパクトディスク（CD)の登場は特にロックやポップスの概念を変えてしまったと言える。LPレコードはA面とB面に分かれていることで、音楽としてより芸術的に色々な表現方法が可能だった。CDが登場した時真っ先に思ったことです。このアルバムもLPレコードで聴くとより味わい深くなる。

LPレコードだとA面は（６）「SYNCHRONICITY II」で終わる。この曲もかなりの問題作だが、ギターのアンディ・サマーズの作った（４）「MOTHER」のようなサイコスリラー的な曲が入ってることで、このアルバムがただ売れたレベルを超越したレコードだと感じさせる。

後半はスティングの怒涛のシングルヒットメドレーだが、(１１）「MURDER BY NUMBERS」はLPには未収録で、CDのボーナス・トラックです。

ポリスの５枚のアルバムは驚くほどそれぞれが色の違う内容になってる。どれも素晴らしい内容で、よくこのアルバムが最高傑作と言われますが、そんなこだわりなく聴くといいと思います。
