   ロックからクラシック音楽への殴りこみの歴史は古く、キム・フォーリーがチャイコフスキーの『くるみ割り人形』を（それにエマーソン、レイク＆パーマーがムソルグスキーの『展覧会の絵』を）アレンジしたときあたりに端を発している。しかし、クラシックの演奏家がロックを取り上げる場合は、概して危険な綱渡り的な演奏になりがちだった。とはいえ、ほとんどのロック・チューンには明確なメロディーがあるので、ソリストにとってはそれが手がかりになるわけだが、ピアニストのクリストファー・オライリーが挑んだのは、近年のロック界でもっとも高い評価を受け、同時にもっとも複雑なテクスチャーをもった曲をつくるバンド、レディオヘッドの作品群だった。

   オライリーの演奏は深い洞察力を感じさせる（彼はこれまでストラヴィンスキーからP.D.Q.バッハまで、ありとあらゆる作品に光を当ててきた）。本作でも催眠術のような、胸にぐっと迫るリスニング体験をさせてくれる。大のレディオヘッド・ファンであるオライリーは、ドリーミーでビタースウィートなタイトル・トラック、物思いに沈むような美しい「Let Down」などを楽しみながら次々と弾いていく。レディオヘッド作品というのは濃密で重層的な音楽であり、メランコリックな雰囲気を漂わせた独特のサウンドはエレクトロニクス処理に頼っている部分が大きい。だがオライリーは、サステイン・ペダルを慎重に用い、（「Knives Out」で聴けるような）不協和音や不安なリズムを刻む左手を効果的に使うだけで、あの複雑なテクスチャーを見事に想起させるのだ。

   ポスト・モダン時代のエチュードと呼んでみることもできるだろうが、ここでオライリーが聴かせる演奏は、すべての偉大な演奏が目標とする境地に楽々と達している。その境地とは、新たな見識とリスナーを啓発する力をもち合せていることだ。（Jerry McCulley, Amazon.com）

　レディオヘッドは、割とクラシックの影響が垣間見えるロックバンドであると、私などは感じているのですが、このアルバムはその彼らの曲をクラシックの演奏家が、ピアノソロで演奏したアルバムです。

　選曲は、1stから『KID A』までのアルバムからされているようで、そのほとんどがレディオヘッドを代表する名曲です。私がこのアルバムを購入したのも選曲が面白かったから、というのが大きく、構成にしても飽きずに聴きとおせるようになっていると思います。

　肝心の演奏ですが一言で言うと『面白い演奏』ですね。メロディはあまりいじらずに、ペダルなどを上手く使って原曲の持ち味を引き出している印象です。しかし、やはりトムの声が欲しいのも事実で、改めてボーカリストの大切さが分かりました。

　ファンの方はかなり楽しめるアルバムだと思います。これが気に入った方は、ジャズピアニストのブラッド・メルドーという人もレディオヘッドの曲を数曲取り上げています。やはり素晴らしい演奏ですので、こちらも楽しめるでしょう。

Radioheadの魅力を中核を為すのがThom Yorkeの声と歌詞にあることは誰にも否定できないだろう。しかし、このアルバムで聴かれるのは、比較的ファンに馴染み深い15曲のピアノ・ソロ。１曲目を聴いてT.Yorkeの声がいかに特別なものかを思い知らされる。しかし同時に、一度音楽を創った上でもう一度壊さずにいられないRadioheadというバンドが持つ特性とメロディ・メイカーとしての彼らの才能に気づかされる。Christophere O'rileyというピアニストにはその二つがわかってるように思える。もっと遊んでほしかった分、★一個マイナスか。ファンの方は是非一聴を。
