ビ・バップといえばチャーリー・パーカーの偉大さの影にほとんどのプレイヤーの存在が希薄にならざるを得ない。ソニー・スティットほどの名手でも、パーカの影に隠れ、アルトからテナーに持ち替え、なんとか耐えていたのだから。パーカーが没した1955年はその意味で、パーカーから開放されたミュージシャンたちが新たなハード・バップという船出を果たした年でもある。パーカーと同じ年に他界してしまったワーデル・グレイはその意味で二重の不幸を背負ったサックス奏者である。パーカー存命中に彼に肉薄した数少ないプレイヤーであったにもかかわらずこれからというときに夭折したことは惜しんでも惜しみきれない。確かにロリンズ、コルトレーンといった天才がこの後にモダン・ジャズを牽引していったわけだが、グレイのけれんみのないスムーズでイマジネーションにとんだソロはおそらく50年代前半の最良のものであったといえよう。デクスター・ゴードンは40年代から強烈な個性を持ったテナーとしてグレイのライバル的存在であったが、その後もスケールの大きなプレイヤーに成長していった。そんな二人の52年のテナー・バトルは、ガチンコ勝負の熱気漂うものであり、後のバトルの原型となった。70~80年代の二人のバトルの再演を聞くことが出来たらどんなにすばらしかったことであろうか。

永き間，ＣＤ化が待ち望まれていたアイテムの１枚。１９５２年２月にカリフォルニア州パサデナ公会堂で行われたライブ音源です。

収録曲は２曲＿"The Chase（追いかけっこ）"，"The Steeplechase(競走馬の障害レース)"＿で演奏時間も２５分少々と短いですが，
音質も悪くなく，当時の西海岸におけるウェスト・コースト・ジャズの熱気の一端を垣間見る（聴く)ことができます。

二人のテナー・バトルをサポートする（というか煽り立てる）チコ・ハミルトンのドラミングも冴えわたっています。
