ジャック・ジョンソンは、自分自身がある種のグルーヴであることに気づいた。実際、ハワイのサーフィン・チャンピオンからオルタナティヴなポップ／フォークを歌うスターへと転身した彼は、セカンド・アルバムで何ひとつ変化を見せていないのである。『Brushfire Fairytales』のファンにとってはうれしい結果だろう。本作のグルーヴはメロウな性格をもつ――全16トラックのほとんどがセミ・アコースティックな作風なのだ。「気楽にやろうぜ」の精神がジョンソンの書く歌詞の隅々に行きわたっている。「なるようになるさ／世の中こうして回ってるんだ（What will be will be / And so it goes）」――オープニング・トラック「Times Like These」で、ジョンソンはこう歌うのだ。
幸いなことに、ジョンソンがメロウになりすぎることは決してない。彼の音楽にはたいてい「心配するな、楽しくいこう」という雰囲気がある。「The Horizon Has Been Defeated」に至っては、レゲエもどきの気分すら漂わせている。オルタナティヴ・ミュージシャンに分類されてはいるが、このシンガー・ソングライターは、過去のヒット曲に多くのものを負っている。「Traffic in the Sky」はジム・クローチの「Operator」やルッキング・グラスの唯一の代表曲「Brandy」を思い出させるナンバー。「Taylor」を歌うときのジョンソンは、ドノヴァンそっくりの声だ。「By The Way」はラヴィン・スプーンフルを思わせる。（Bill Holdship, Amazon.com）
