   こんな演奏が残っていたとは。ほんと、これには感激だ。61年３月にマイルスは『サムデイ・マイ・プリンス・ウイル・カム』を録音、そのあと4月にサンフランシスコのジャズ・クラブ、ブラックホークに出演した。その時の演奏は当初、2枚のアルバムで発売された(12曲)。それがこのコンプリート盤はなんと29曲入り。2日間8セットのライヴは同じ曲を何度も演奏していることもあって、その一部しか発表されなかったわけだが、本作によって全貌が明らかになった。
   ハンク・モブレー、ウイントン・ケリー、ポール・チェンバース、ジミー・コブを擁するここに聴かれるマイルス・クインテットは、コルトレーンがいた時代とも、その後ウェイン・ショーターが加入する黄金のクインテットとも違って、ひたすらシンプルに荒々しく突進する典型的なハードバップ・バンド。だから理屈抜きに楽しめる。マイルスにとってこれは最初のライヴ盤だった。マイルスはもちろんだけど、ウイントン・ケリーのピアノが最高に素晴らしい。ケリーのファンにとっても必携盤だ。（市川正二）

マイルスの未発表音源がコンスタントにリリースされている。マイルスは、「もう俺のブックは閉じたんだ」と言うだろうが、ファンにとっては、貴重な宝を提供されて嬉しい限りです。ブラックホークのライブ音源がCD４枚分も有ったとは、驚きです。「朝日のようにさわやかに」は、以前、全くリリースされていない音源です。初版LPでは、マイルス以外のプレイヤーの演奏が部分的にカットされていたが、今回は全曲未編集。ファンとしては、アドリブ内容の是非にかかわらず、そのステージを再現されるのは、好ましいと思います。従来盤を持っている人も買いましょう。テナーがコルトレーンでなく、ハンク・モブレーなので、演奏は軽快です。その点では、アンチコルトレーン派も聴きやすいでしょう。必携！

マイルスはジャズミュージシャンなので、ジャズをやるわけですが、普段のマイルスは日本のジャズファンが好むような音楽ではありません。ではジャズじゃないのかというとうやっぱりジャズなのですが、普通でないジャズをやっていたのがマイルスだったわけです。しかし、そんなマイルスもウイントン・ケリー、ポール・チェンバース、ジミー・コブという普通のジャズメンがノリノリで演奏するものだから、マイルスもつられて普通のジャズをやっているという。いわばジャズマンであるマイルスがジャズをやっているのに驚かされるという不思議なアルバムです。
なので、マイルスのカミソリのようにキレる音楽を愛する方には不向きでしょう。実に普通のモダンジャズです。
