   人気作家ポール・オースターが、自身の短編を脚色。監督は香港出身のウェイン・ワン。NYの下町ブルックリンを舞台にした群像ドラマだ。本作の魅力は、ブルックリンの街に限りなくなじんでいる俳優たちだろう。10年以上もの間、毎日、同じ場所にカメラを向けるタバコ屋の店主にハーヴェイ・カイテル。店の常連客で、店主の写真のなかに亡き妻の姿を見つける作家、ウィリアム・ハート。そこにもうひとり、作家を交通事故から助け、父親を探す黒人少年。映画が進むにつれ、3人それぞれの家族関係が浮き彫りにされていく。
   ドラマチックな展開が用意されているわけではなく淡々と進む物語だが、その分、要所でドキリとさせる一瞬が訪れる。たとえば、凍死した父を発見する息子が、すでにそこで眠る父の年齢を越えていたというエピソード。また、強気を貫いてきた娘が、両親に背を向けられたときに浮かべる悲痛な表情。そんな心に引っ掛かる映像の数々が、じわじわと感動を高め、締めくくりは、すべての人を優しく包み込むような「いい話」。上質な文学作品の香りが漂う、逸品だ。（斉藤博昭）

この作品にでてくるのは、なにかを失ってしまった人たちばかりです。永遠に失ってしまった人もあれば、取り返すことができるかもしれない人もいます。みんな打ちのめされ、失望しています。
それでも、この作品は「がんばれ」なんて言いません。「がんばらなくても大丈夫。人間てけっこう強いから、それでも生きていけるんだよ」と優しく語りかけてくれます。
まだこの作品を観ていない方は、なにかを失ったと思ったときや自分は幸せではないと感じたときに観ることをお勧めします。きっと、こんな思いを感じているのは自分だけでないと気づくことができるはずです。

派手な演出もアクションもありません。
ゆっくりと日常が流れるなかで、少しずつ絡み合う人生。
登場人物が皆何かを失い、失望しながらも生きている。

会話がとても文学的で、
会話の中にあるエピソードもとても印象深い。
そしてとてもリアルな生活が描かれます。

しみじみとした映画。
何故か心に残る映画。
大人の映画です。

毎朝８時、同じ角に立ち写真を撮り続けるタバコ屋の中年店主。
そこへタバコを買いに来る小説家、小説家と偶然知り合う黒人少年、
ちょっとずつ絡み合う三人の日常、事情。
煙草が嫌いな方には理解出来ないかも知れませんが、
煙草なくしては完成されないシーンというものが映画には（もちろん現実にも）あります。
この映画はまさしくそれの連続。
煙の揺れ方ひとつひとつが登場人物の心情を映していて素晴らしい。
そして、小説家が語るタバコの煙の重さを量る方法や、
少年の父親が腕の代わりに受け取ったもの、店主が写真を撮るようになったきっかけなど、登場する全ての物語がどれも良いんです。
イギリス映画のような、じんわりと心に残る映画です。
特に煙草を吸う方は、煙草から生まれる「間」を実感できる分、より一層この映画が染みると思います。
