公開当時に劇場で観ました。その余りの芸術性に観客が付いて行けず、映画自体は一部では熱狂的に歓迎されましたが、大ヒットとはゆかず、製作のにんじんプロも倒産してこの作品のオリジナル版は忘れ去られました。長い間この作品はカンヌ出品版がクライテリオンから発売されておりまして、東宝からは相当遅れてＬＤが発売になりましたが、全てカンヌ版でした。オリジナル版との違いが最も顕著なのは第一話の「黒髪」でしょうが、どうも今回発掘された原版というのがどういう版なのか多少疑問があります。確かに可能な限りオリジナル版に近づいているのですが、どうしても修復出来ない場面をアウトテイクの流用で作ってあるみたいです。（同じ場面ですが、微妙に違うのです）。数年前、この映画に使用された中村正義画伯の壇ノ浦絵図の展覧会で上映された当時のプリントで40年ぶりに見直しておりますので、これは確かです。得点映像に当時のオリジナル画像の一部でも是非追加して欲しかったと思うのはこの名画を愛する人は皆さん思っておられると思いますが。
とはいえ、画像も音声も最大限修復されており、これ以上のバージョンは以降発売される事はないでしょう。オリジナルを知らない若い人たちに新しい良心的なスタンダードが提供された事を心からお慶び申し上げます。

粟津潔デザインのOP、武満徹の音楽、戸田重昌の美術、
どの要素も見る者に鮮烈な印象を残す作品。

DVDの画質は上々。個人的にはもう少しコントラストが
強いほうが画に「怖さ」が出たのでは、とも思うが
十分満足できると思う。あとは特典がちょっと少ないかと。

先頃発売された「武満徹全集」の映画音楽集1には
作曲家自身による編集されたバージョンしか収録されていないので、
全ての音楽を聴けるのはこのソフトのみ。
武満ファンの方にもお奨め。

些細な脇役に至までこれだけの映画人、演劇人総動員でかためた作品は現在では望むべくもない。
武満徹の音楽、音響もすばらしい！
特に僕は第三話の「耳無しほういちの話」の筑前琵琶と「茶碗のなか」の薩摩琵琶の音が大好きだった！
主な俳優仁もこの世を去って久しいがこのへんの作品を最後に映画界が永い斜陽化の道を辿ることになるのだ。
