　数ある忠臣蔵映画の中でもこの作品は決定版といえるものではないだろうか。
　やはり最大の見所は討ち入りシーン。深作欣二監督ならではのダイナミックな演出が遺憾なく効果を発揮し、「殺陣」というよりもはや「残酷描写」ともいうべき生々しい迫力を生み出している。

　さらに萬屋錦之助をはじめとする超豪華キャストの緊迫感あふれる演技も壮大な仇討劇をドラマチックに彩っている。
　造りはとてもオーソドックスでストレートだが、それゆえにスタッフ・キャストが気合いを入れて制作した、という意気込みが伝わってくる大作である。

故・深作欣二監督による忠臣蔵映画です。当時「柳生一族の陰謀」を大ヒットさせた余勢を駆って制作された本作は、東映時代劇大作と呼ぶにふさわしく、萬屋錦之介以下オールスターが勢揃いする映画となりました。中でも渡瀬恒彦扮する吉良方・小林平八郎がカッコいい！　権謀術数をもって赤穂浪士を追い詰めると共に、討ち入り時には二刀流を振り回して赤穂浪士相手に大奮戦！　とにかく豪華！　全てがダイナミック！　今となっては信じられないほど衣装やセットも凝りに凝っています。津島利章による音楽もいいです。

惜しむらくは深作監督らしい切れのいい演出があるものの、同時期に製作された「柳生一族の陰謀」「真田幸村の謀略」「徳川一族の崩壊」程の奇想天外さが皆無で、至極正統な作品に仕上がっている点でしょうか。
ちなみに深作監督は後年に「忠臣蔵外伝・四谷怪談」を撮っていますので、併せて見ると面白いかも。

私自身、深作監督の作品はどうも苦手なところがあるんですが、「忠臣蔵を扱っている」ということで見てみたんですが…。
「新しい忠臣蔵を描こう」（ＤＶＤ収録の予告より)という深作監督の意気込みは買うんですが、なんだか「あれも入れたい、これも入れたい」という場面を入れた結果、話が散漫になってしまい、結局誰が主役なのか分からなくなってしまったような印象があります。
討ち入りの場面もなんだか「討ち入り」というよりは仁侠映画の「出入り」といった方がぴったりするくらいで(笑)。まあ、これは仁侠映画が得意だった深作監督だったからかもしれませんが。
所謂「普通の忠臣蔵映画」を期待すると肩透かしを食らうかもしれませんが、「こういう解釈もあるんだ」と思って見たほうがいいかもしれませんね。
