人気ピアニストによる9年ぶりのECM録音。今回は全曲オリジナルで、ストリングス・アンサンブルとの共演盤。リリシズムあふれるキューンのピアノ・プレイを存分に楽しめる。代表曲の再録も収録。


内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)

スティーヴ・キューンのウィズ・ストリングス作品。キューン念願の企画ということで、元の制作はキューン自身。後でマンフレッド・アイヒャーがリミックスし、ECM作品として登場した。そんなわけでECMには珍しいいいささか甘さが目立つ内容と言っていいだろう。もっともこれがキューンであるという言い方もしっかりできるはずだ。曲は、むろん全曲キューンのオリジナルだが、その半分がECMに残した傑作『トランス』ほかに発表されていたものの再演。キューンのメロディに潜むリリシズムは、独特の光があって、ファンが多いが、演奏によって大分その光の色調がかわってくる。これはフツーのトリオ演奏とECMの諸作の中間と言ったところだろうか。程ほどに甘さを湛え、同時に弦のあらたまった格調も備わっている。キューンのメロディを愛するファンにお勧めだ。とはいえ、アレンジは、それほど斬新とは言えない。むしろ手の込んだハーモニーは、コンセプトに反するかもしれない。 (青木和富) --- 2004年05月号

普通のピアニストがwith stringsをやると、きっと「あなたと夜と音楽と」とか「everything」なんかを聞きやすいアレンジでやるのだろうけれど、さすがキューン、やってくれました。すべて自作曲に濃厚なカルロス・フランゼッティの弦アレンジで、知に走りすぎず、金に走りすぎず、アーティストとしての背筋のピンと張った感じを聞かせてくれます。これってとても難しいことで、きちんとした音楽理念がないとどちらかに転びがちなものです。この作品でキューンのメロディのすばらしさに触れました。ヴィーナスのキューンも良いですが、やはりキューンといえば耽美。酒の友にはこの程度の深みのある奴を選びたいもの。ちなみに僕のfavoritはマイルスのkind of blue,キースのmy song,スタン・ゲッツのヴァーブ時代のplaysです。

このアルバムを聞いて、Steve Kuhnという人は本当にさまざまな才能があるなあと実感させられる。なんと言ってもECMカラーを周到しつつ、ストリングオーケストラをバックに雄大なスケールで展開してくれる。ここでもKuhnは感情を押し殺したような端麗なスタイルに徹している。それが弦の妖しさとピアノの繊細さが織りなす怖いくらいギリギリのバランスを保っている。「Trance」がベスト。
