   『Think Tank』はブラーにとって思い入れのある1枚だろう。レコーディング中にオリジナルメンバーのグレアム・コクソンが脱退してしまったのだから。ではこのブラー復帰作がいまひとつかというと、前作同様アイデアのごった煮ながら統一感のある1枚に仕上がっている。

   デーモン・アルバーンのソロ・プロジェクト、ゴリラズのド派手ポップと実にエモーショナルな前作『13』に続いての新作は、ソウルフルで微妙な味わいの1枚。ブラーらしいロックナンバーも2曲用意されている。「Crazy Beat」はノリノリの定番「Song 2」を思わせるし、「We've Got A File On You」は短いながら出来が良く、扇動的なパンクバンド、クラスがモロッコの蛇使いと喧嘩しているかのよう。

   とはいえ変わった点もやはりある。デーモン・アルバーンのメロディセンスは健在だが、コクソンの破壊的なギターがないせいか『Think Tank』は別のバンドのような印象を与える。モロッコでのレコーディングとデーモンのマリ音楽への傾倒がブラーに変化をもたらした。「Caravan」ではらくだのペースのようなスローリズム、「Gene by Gene」では砂漠を連想させるかのようなクロスリズムと意表を突くサウンドが使われている。今のブラーは正統派ロックではなく自分たち独自の音楽を追及しているようだ。進化しすぎてついていけないと思うファンもいるだろうが、ありのままのブラー、つまり変化し続ける彼らを受け入れることのできるファンには、この『Think Tank』は聴きごたえ十分の1枚だ。(Caroline Butler, Amazon.co.uk)

これはデビューから「Music Is My Rader」までのブラーの音楽の、03年当時の集大成的作品と言えるし、未知の境地へ踏み出した記念碑的作品でもある。グレアム不在というのは確かに大きいし、大きいからこそこの作品以降デーモンはグレアムのカムバックを待って次作を長引かせているわけだ。だがこの作品はグレアムの不在が好を奏している所も多々ある。民族風へなへなギター(デーモン)に、がっちりとしたリズム隊このコントラストが何とも居心地のいい音楽を作り出している。アフリカやキューバ音楽、アメリカのインディロックにエレクトロニックな要素、イギリス的ポップセンス。いずれもブラーを形作るのに不可欠だったし、これをうまく混ぜ合わせ結晶化させたのが『シンク・タンク』だった。
グレアムはブラーの「個性」としてのキャラクターや演奏や音楽を提供し続けていたのだが、脱退したとしててもブラーはブラーでしかない。もちろん個人的には次作には戻ってくることを願ってるけど、3人のままじゃブラーでなくなると言えば絶対違う。彼の脱退がターニングポイントになるとすれば我々はブラーを聞き続ける価値はあるんじゃないだろうか。これほど素晴らしい作品を作ってくれたのならまだ聴き続ける価値はあるんじゃないだろうか

BLURの４年振りの新作。本作で聴ける楽曲は、マリの民族音楽にエレクトロニカ、パンクロック、ブルースなどをむりやり混ぜた様な独特のサウンドになっている。製作の一部をモロッコで行ったり、現地ミュージシャンも起用している。この方向性を受け入れる事が出来なかったグレアムはバンドを脱退してしまう。仕方ないので本作のギターは全てデーモンが弾いている。テクニックはともかく面白いスタイルのギタープレイが逆に本作の方向性には合っているのが可笑しい。プロデューサーとして参加しているＦＡＴＢＯＹ　ＳＬＩＭやオービットのセンスは、本作のモダンでいて古さを感じさせない音作りの要因の一つであろう。それぞれの曲を解説。２曲目「ＯＵＴ　ＯＦ　ＴＩＭＥ」ポリティカルソング、ひたすら切なく美しいバラードである。私はこの１曲の為だけでも本作を買う価値は十分にあると考えている。ＵＫチャートではベスト５入りを果たしている。３曲目「ＣＲＡＺＹ　ＢＥＡＴ」これはノーマンの色が濃いのかなぁ。ＰＯＰなダンスロックソングになっている。まぁ、ソレがＢＬＵＲといえばそうなんだけど。５曲目「ＯＮ　ＴＨＥ　ＷＡＹ　ＴＯ　ＴＨＥ　ＣＬＵＢ」もメランコリックな美しいバラード。間奏がオービットぽくて個人的には嬉しい。民族色の激しい「ＭＯＲＯＣＣＡＮ　ＰＥＯＰＬＥＳ」確かにＢＬＵＲの楽曲以外の何物でもないのだが、モロッコ臭さ（笑）に嫌がる人は多そうです。ラスト「ＢＡＴＴＥＲＹ　ＩＮ　ＹＯＵＲ　ＬＥＧ」唯一グレアムのギターが聴ける曲である。バンド結成時の、過ぎ去った日の事を歌っているバラード。音の作り方がＤ・ボウイの「ＳＰＡＣＥ　ＯＤＤＩＴＹ」に似ている。色々な感情や時間が凝縮され渦巻いている。とても心にクるピアノの音も相成って切な過ぎるサウンドが胸を撃つ。全体的に見るとロック色は減ったかもしれない。「バンドが大人になった」とアレックスが言っているが、本作を聴くと成る程と頷ける。確かに今までの作品に比べると若者には退屈かもしれない（笑）

グレアムがいなくても、すごく良い!!デーモンの音楽に対する知識とそれを実践する姿勢にただ、驚くばかり。　　　グレアムのいるシンクタンクを聴いてみたいのが本音。
