『肉体の冠』の名監督、ジャック・ベッケルが、ジョゼ・ジョヴァンニの同名実録小説を基に映像化した意欲作。ある刑務所に服役中の、お互いに気心の知れた4人の囚人は、綿密に脱獄を計画していた。そこに、新たに一人の青年が収容されてくるのだが…。

この映画には音楽がない。それがこの映画を決定的に特別なものにしている。
なぜなら監獄に音楽などなく、夜になると全くの無音状態になる。そんな中、主人公達は脱獄するための穴を掘り続ける。無音の中でコンクリートに鉄の棒をたたきつける「ガシガシ」という音、鉄格子の鉄棒をヤスリで切ろうとする「ギコギコ」という音が異様に大きく響く。彼らは脱獄しようとしているのだ、もしバレたら一巻の終わり。
無音の中の効果音が、そんな圧しつけるような緊張感を見ている方にもこれでもかというほど感じさせる。監督もこのことを意識しているらしく、穴を掘るシーンでは普通の映画よりも効果音が大きい。

結末も凄まじく、観終った後には衝撃と疲れでしばらく放心状態でした。

モノクロ作品というのは緊張感を深めてくれる。「穴」も古い映画で、モノクロ作品だ。登場人物は脱獄のため、汗と土埃で汚れる男だけ。
モノクロが否応にも味を出してくれる。

脱獄ものなので、通常なら見つかるかもしれないという緊張感が占めるものだが、この作品の特徴は、脱獄のために遠慮なく部屋を破壊していく音である。こんなに音を立ててもいいのかと見る者に異様な緊張感を与えていく。

最初から最後まで緊張しっぱなしのスゴイ作品だった。

脱獄。なんと素晴らしい響きなのだ。そこに下手なひねりなど必要ない。穴を掘るか否か、だけが重要なファクターなのだ。4人の男達が夜中に穴を掘る。ひたすら掘る。それだけで十分ではないか。
コンクリートの壁を金属の棒でたたきつける。たたきつける。かなりデカい音をさせているが大丈夫なのか？と下衆な勘繰りなど必要ない。

大脱走でもそうだったが、「よくこんな所に『その道のプロ』がいるもんだ、んなアホな！」とか云う事もここでは必要ない。

素直に最後まで観ればよい。脱獄物の古典であり傑作である。
