吉田秀和氏曰く「ポリーニと双璧」。30年たってもこの2盤に比較しうるものが出ないのもむべなるかな。アシュケナージのテクニックに支えられた太い詩情は特に後半、終曲に向けて盛り上がる。練習曲の第3番「別れの曲」は富田靖子が熱演した1985の大林宣彦監督映画「さびしんぼう」で重要なモチーフとして使用されていた。元々はショパンの生涯を描いた1934年のドイツ映画「別れの曲(Abschiedswalzer,英題=Farewell Waltz)」のテーマ曲で「別れの曲」の通称もこの映画から生まれました。ちなみにアシュケナージは５９-６０年に当時ソ連のメロディアにもエチュードを録音しており、こちらはより深刻な諸相に満ちた劇演となっており、あわせて推薦しておく。

ピアノ専攻の音大生に未だに人気高いアシュケナージの練習曲集。
多少線の細さを感じるが、音楽的感情も込められており、バランスの良い定番と思います。いい意味で無難にまとめられている所などは、彼のセンスの良さでしょう。
これといって指摘する所も無いので「お手本的教材」としても良いのではないのでしょうか？少なくともホロビッツやブーニンの様なクセのある演奏よりはアシュケナージの正統な演奏の方が聴き始めには良いと思います。

お薦めです。

5.0 out of 5 stars 理想的なショパンエチュード, 2004/7/14
ショパンエチュードはこれまでに何人ものピアニストによって録音されてきたが、その中で僕がいちばん気に入っているのがこのアシュケナー時の録音である。この曲集において重要なのは「技巧と音楽性のバランス」だと思う。“技巧”を強く出しすぎるとただの指の訓練のための「エチュード」になってしまうし、“音楽性”を強調すると今度は「エチュード」ではなくなってしまう。そんな難曲集をアシュケナージは絶妙のバランスで見事に弾ききっている。

あえて１曲だけについて書くと、Op.25-1「エオリアン･ハープ」が素晴らしい。テンポは遅めだが、ひとつひとつの音が泉から湧き出る水のようにきらきらと輝いている。そしてクライマックスでの右手小指の♭ソ（34小節4拍目）の音！この♭ソの音が心にじ~んとくる。この部分で感動出来るのはアシュケナージの演奏だけである。ここを聴く度にやっぱショパンエチュードはアシュケナージだなあ、と思ってしまう。
