演奏はフィリップ・ジョーンズ・ブラス・アンサンブル、指揮はエルガー・ハワース。この楽団はエルガー・ハワースの引退に伴って解散しており、録音は解散直前の１９８３年から１９８５にかけて行われている。したがって、この演奏はＣＤでしか聴けないものとなった。まず、録音が優れている。ＤＤＤであるが、２チャンネルステレオなのに、音に奥行きを感じる。さらにオーディオのスピーカー後面を壁に密着しないで、数十センチ離すとさらに奥行きを感じる事が出来る。

曲はクラシックのお馴染みの名曲がブラスにアレンジされており、オーケストラとは趣が異なる演奏だ。この点がブラスファンにはたまらない。テンポは中庸で、それぞれのブラス楽器の音はクリアで鋭い。また主旋律のみがくっきりと浮かび上がるメリハリのある演奏でもある。

ブラスによるマーチ集の決定版だ。

日本のＣＤにしては珍しく「ジョージアを越えて」が聞けます、海外で出されているＣＤにも録音されていますが味気なくこの演奏には劣ります、ぜひ一度聞いてみてください

あんなに上手なフレッチャーが地味に、ひたすらスーザのマーチを刻んでいるところは、もう感動ものです。でも、星条旗のピッコロのオブリガートはいっそのことハワースが吹いたほうがいいのでは？という気もします。ま、マーチ王がピッコロで書いてるんだったらしょうがないですね。
