アシュケナージ・ＢＳＯによる、貴重なライヴ。指揮者アシュケナージの、シベリウスとの（ラフマニノフ等と並ぶ）相性のよさを示す‘音楽’の精華であり、サラステ等の正統・洗練、よくある純音楽的‘ただの交響曲’としての「シベ２」演奏とは一線を画する、漲る熱が、この楽曲が等身大の人間のドラマであることを立証する。

アシュケナージの‘歌’の真価は伝統的オケの‘潜在能力’を引き出すかのようであり、ＢＳＯは解き放たれた剥き出しの純粋さでこれに応える。見事に発揮された相乗効果が、この珍しいコンビによる当演奏の特殊な価値の所以であろう。四楽章最終部分、照らし出される‘発見’が、当演奏そのものにも重なるのだ。
