普段は強力な管に隠れがちな、シカゴ交響楽団の弦セクションの実力がよく表れた１枚です。ウィーン・フィルやフィラデルフィア管弦楽団のような「滴るような」音とは違った、むしろストレートで濁りの少ない音が彼らならではの美質だと思います。それゆえに楽曲や指揮者によっては物足りなく感じることもあるわけですが、やはり育ての親のショルティとの相性は最高で、一陣の風が吹き抜けるような爽やかさを満喫できます。ショルティは後にウィーン・フィルと「イタリア」を再録音していますが、そちらがオケに任せきったオーソックスな演奏であるのに対し、この盤の方はぐいぐいと手兵を引っ張っていく覇気が感じられ、快感の度合いは上だと思います。

~ショルティの「イタリア」は私にとって、初めての恋人のような曲です。大学生のとき、FMでカセットテープに撮ったものを繰り返し聴いていました。CDで、また（貧乏学生の当時よりは）いいオーディオで聴いてみると、1985年という録音年代ですが、立体感のある、大変きれいな録音に聴こえます。弦、金管、木管、共にシャープな音ですね。同じショルティのベートー~~ヴェン交響曲演奏も合わせて聴いてみますと、「イタリア」は、ベートーヴェンでは6番（田園）と比較できるかと思います。共に人間性溢れる主題が全編を支配していますが、最終楽章（田園では5楽章中4楽章）で、一瞬厳しい主題がある。このコントラストがショルティ盤では、メンデルスゾーンの方でもベートーヴェンの方でも、見事に描き出されている、と感じま~~す。

イタリア、の第三楽章のゆるやかな主題。学生のとき、嫌な先生（？）や変なクラスメート（？）と巡り合ってしまった時も、この演奏が私の心を包み込むように入って来て、不思議とたおやかな気持ちになり、楽しく暮らすことができました。この演奏は、一生つき合っていける、最初の恋人（それなら、生涯の伴侶かな？）のような作品です~

4.0 out of 5 stars モーツァルトを思わせる楽しげな「イタリア」, 2004/10/24
全体としてテンポがやや速めで、よく整った演奏。「イタリア」はまるでモーツァルトのセレナードのように楽しく、聴いていて気持ちがいい。反対に「スコットランド」は曲自体と同じく哀愁を帯びて美しい。
