ベートーヴェン54歳、死の3年前。初演後、拍手に応える彼の目に涙はあったのやろうか？アルト歌手のウンガーに教えられて客席の歓声を「見た」、全く耳の聞こえない彼。耳が聴こえなくなってしもとった彼の時代に鳴っていたものではなく、彼の心に、彼の意志に鳴っていた実存は？

1, 2, 3楽章と進行するにつれ、緊密な構成感から片時もぶれることなどなく、奏者全員一丸となって胸を突き上げてくる。グイグイと勢いを増し畳み掛けてくる第2楽章のリフレーズ。洗練され尽くした苦悩の表出、そして解放と歓喜の昇華。ホールの録音のよさも相俟って意志的造形自体がマスとなって迫ってくるけども、時折静けさをたたえた晩年のこの作曲家の素顔？と思わせる透明で静かなフレーズも、ときおり名手のソロに導かれて聴こえてくる。録音のよさや各パートのヴィルトゥオーゾ振りだけでなく、自己耽溺することのないショルティの指揮は、何度も聴き返したくなります。永遠の、至高の1枚

１回目の録音と２回目の録音とで、最も差の顕著なのが、この第９だろう。まるで別の指揮者とオーケストラが演奏しているかの様である。ショルティ１回目の第９（１９７２年）とバーンスタイン＆ウィーン・フィルの第９（１９７９年）とを聴き比べてみてほしい。両者が似ていることに、特に第１楽章の終末の表現が酷似していることに、驚かれるであろう。ちなみに哲学者のウィトゲンシュタインは、この第１楽章に関して、自身のメモに「宇宙的」と書いている。さらに別のところには「時計の等時性と音楽における等時性。両者はけっしておなじ概念ではない」（『反哲学的断章』/青土社）とあって、面白い。

この２回目の録音を有機的と評価するか無機的と評価するかで、意見が分かれるところだろう。１回目の古い響き、前半部の何とも禍々しい感じを味わうのも悪くない。しかし聴く者は、２回目の演奏に対して自分で自分の中に、熱と感情とを目覚めさせねばならない。

そしてシラーの詩が、未来の詩として、声高々とうたわれる・・・
