マウンテンといったら、私の中ではやはり本作「Climbing!」ということになります。'６９年当時、デヴューしたツェッペリンのIやIIに完全にノックアウトされていた私でしたが、IIIで少し気が抜けたところへの'７０年、マウンテンの本作はかなりの衝撃でありました。ニューヨークで活躍するブルースギタリスト、ヒロ鈴木氏のコラムによると、５年程前とあるニューヨークのブルースクラブ出演中、なぜか聞き覚えのある「イェーイ」と言う声の主は、そのデカい身体でズカズカとステージに上がりヒロ氏のギターを弾きまくったという事で、それはなんとあの巨漢レスリーウェスト本人だったそうです。その時のギターの音色は、まぎれもなく本作「想像されたウェスタンのテーマ」のあの音であり、一瞬にして'７０年当時がフラッシュバックしたという事でした。マウンテンの良さは何と言ってもハードな面とナィーヴな面の両方が楽しめる所にあります。レスリーウェストのワイルドでありながら繊細なギター、本作ジャケットのイラストを書いた奥さんに撃ち殺されてしまったフェリックスパッパラルディのうなるベース、タイトなコーキーレィングのドラム等、当時良いと感じた音が、そのまま今私の中でもフラッシュバックします。
'７０年後半に、クリェーションの竹田和夫とのコラボレーションで見た武道館でのパッパラルディも思い出されて、なつかしい佳作の一枚です。本作リマスター盤で、マウンテンサウンドの良さに改めて気づく人も多いのではないかと思います。

とかく1や2に話題が集中する本作だが、決してそれだけではないのが本作である。ハードさを前面に押し出したリフが印象的な3、粘着質なリフ・フレーズが聴き手の心をかきむしる4、メロウさとハードさが絶妙に同居した5、アコギによるインド音楽的なインスト曲6、6に導かれるかのように静かに幕を開ける7、再び豪快なテンションで迫る8、しっとりかつハードにラストを飾る9…こんな感じであるが、曲の良さ・アンサンブル・叙情性を重視した音作りを考えると、クリームの作品より耳に残る魅力を放っていると思える一枚だ。ヴァニラ・ファッジ同様、もっと評価されていいバンドだとも思う。彼らを聴かずして、ディープ・パープルやランディ・ローズを語るなど愚の骨頂もいいところなのだから…。

７０年発表の２ｎｄ。クリームを手掛けたプロデューサー、フェリックス・パッパラルディが、名ギタリスト、レスリー・ウェストらと結成したハード・ロック・バンド。このアルバムではコラシアムなどでの名演でも知られる元クリームのジャック・ブルース作の「イマジナリー・ウェスタン」を収録していることもあって入り易い作品になっているかもしれない。彼らはメンバーの死などもあって今でこそあまり知られていないが、いわゆるハード・ロックというジャンルでは超一級の演奏と楽曲を多数残している。このアルバムを聞けば間違いなく虜になると断言出来る。それくらい素晴しいグループである。とにかくレスリーの重いギターの音色と見事に組み立てられたリフの数々を聞いてみてほしい。
１．は『イージー・ライダー』のサントラでも有名な曲。タイトルは知らなくとも一度は耳にしたことがあるであろう名曲である。この曲のギターのイントロには痺れまくること必至。この曲から例の名曲２．流れる様も涙ものだと思う。３．も物凄いインパクトを持ったギター・リフがカッコイイ。４．もカッコイイぞ！！。５．は泣きの名曲。６．では流暢なアコギのソロを聞かせている。
このクソ重い演奏はツェッペリンに匹敵するレベル。このグループを聞かずしてハード・ロックなど分からないと思う。男泣きできる名曲がギッシリ。
