このアルバムに収録されているものは，チャップリンの映画で使われた曲と，チャップリンが映画の中で披露した肉声に分けることができます。チャップリンの肉声は今ではDVD等で聞くことができますが，ＣＤに収録されていることはそれはそれで価値があると思います。評価が難しいのはもう一つの映画での使用曲の方です。もし映画で使われているのと同じようなストリングス中心のオーケストラ演奏を聴きたい方にはあまりお勧めできません。（もし映画に近い演奏を求めるのであればミッシェルビラールオーケストラの「チャップリン・ミュージック・ベスト・セレクション」の方をお勧めします）このＣＤで演奏を担当しているのはザ・フューリーズというアイルランドのグループですが，極めてアコースティックなサウンドになっています。映画の原曲の演奏とアレンジが全く違うのですが，原曲がすばらしい曲なので，これはこれで非常に耳に心地よく響きます。ただ選曲がチャップリンの後期の作品からの曲にやや偏っている気がしますのでそのあたりも少し残念です。

10年前、高校の授業で観た『チャップリンのモダン・タイムス』(1936)。終盤で、チャップリン自身が「放浪紳士チャーリー」として最初で最後の歌声を無国籍語で聴かせた唄「ティティナ」にびっくり仰天。以来、収録したCDはないものかと探し続けて10年目。ようやく手に入りました。

チャップリン自身の歌声は、「ティティナ」以外にも、名作『ライムライト』(1952)からの「調教師」「スプリング・ソング」「いわしの唄」、『ニューヨークの王様』(1954)で一瞬流れる「百万ドル」、そしてサイレント映画時代末期の『サーカス』(1928)をサウンド版として再公開するにあたり、80歳を過ぎたチャップリンが朗々と歌う「スウィング・ハイ・リトルガール」…と、大変貴重なものばかり。

そして、チャップリンが作曲した曲!（未公開も含む）を、優しく情感豊かに歌い上げているザ・フューリーズには、ただただ脱帽。彼らの雰囲気はチャップリンの曲にぴったりです。

ビデオで鑑賞している時にしか聴けなかった名曲が、あなたのCDプレイヤーから改めて歌いかけてきますよ。
