英国ゴシックメタルの重鎮、My Dying Brideの3rdアルバム。Vo.のアーロンは前作まで使用していたデスボイスを捨て去り、楽曲も彼らの美的側面がより強調されたものとなった。悲哀を帯びたマーティンのバイオリンとキーボードは更に楽曲アレンジの中で比重を強めている。しかしその美しさの深淵に在るのは絶望的な闇であり、決して光など見出す事は出来ない陰欝なる世界。 又、 #1「The Cry Of Mankind」は彼らの楽曲の中でも屈指の名曲。 ドゥームゴシックが好きであればお勧めします。

この１枚を聴かずしてゴシックメタルは語れないでしょう。
特に１曲目は名曲です。暗・哀・重・美スケールの大きい大作で流れるようなピアノが胸をうつ。曲終盤のクジラの声のようなサンプル音（たぶんバイオリン？）とか凝ってます。
重く、暗く内向的な音。部屋にこもって憂鬱な気分を満喫（？）したい時にはこれ。

他のアルバムと比べると毒が薄まっている気がしないでもないけど、綺麗で陰鬱なギターメロが繰り返し鳴り響く一曲目などは本当に良い曲。でも、『Turn loose the Swan』が一番好きみたいな人にとってはちょっとソフトに聞こえる。そんなこといっても好きなアルバム。このバンドは本当に駄作が無い。
