   ヤー・ヤー・ヤーズのデビュー・アルバム『Fever to Tell』がリリースされたのは、過酷なスケジュールのツアー、激しいライヴ、見事な出来の5トラック入りEP『Yeah Yeah Yeahs』と続いた彼らが妙に勢いづき、一時的な興奮状態にあった最中だった。おまけにヴォーカルのカレン・Oは、デボラ・ハリー、キム・ディール以来もっとも強烈なカリスマ性をもつフロントウーマンときている――スタイリッシュで、自信にあふれ、自己主張が強く、ほとんど非現実的なまでにクールなのだ。同じくニューヨークに拠点に置いたザ・ストロークスのデビュー以降、新人バンドにこれほどまでに期待が寄せられたことはなかった。それだけに、『Fever to Tell』に少しばかり失望させられるのは仕方のないところだろう。

   しかし、失望させられたからといって出来の悪いアルバムだとは限らない。『Fever to Tell』ではインディーズ系ノイズ・ロックが大爆発している（ギター・ロックの超大物プロデューサー、アラン･モールダーの起用は大正解。彼なしでこれほどの成果があり得ただろうか？）。ギタリストのニック・ジナーが繰り出すジョン・スペンサーばりのリフ、ドラマーのブライアン・チェイスが打ちこむ激しいバックビートに乗って（最近のアート系ガレージ・ロックのスタイルに従い、このバンドにはベース奏者が不在）、カレン・Oは自由奔放な熱気と挑発的なセクシャリティを振りまきながら、あえぎ、声を震わせ、絶叫する。シンプルな編成のおかげで、すべてが生々しく、ごつごつとした感触をもち、彼らのライヴの雰囲気がそのまま伝わってくる（特に、リラックスした「Cold Light」と熱のこもったシングル曲「Date with the Night」）。

   それにしても、EPと同じレベルに達しているトラックがひとつもないのは残念な限りだ（不思議なことに、本作にはEPのトラックが1曲も収められていない）。つまり、いかにもキャッチーなロック・アンセムが見当たらないのだ（ここには「Miles Away」も「Our Time」も「Mystery Girl」もない）。その代わり、『Fever to Tell』には、最初から最後まで実に手堅くまとまったトラックが並んでいる。悪くない出来であることは確かだ（現在、数多くのアルバムがリリースされているが、その中に最初から最後まで通しての鑑賞に耐えうるものが一体どれぐらいあるというのか？）。だが、ヤー・ヤー・ヤーズの真の実力はこんな程度ではないという気がするのだ。『Fever to Tell』は、ファースト・アルバムとして、まずは合格点といえる。願わくば、2作目こそ大傑作になりますように。（Robert Burrow, Amazon.co.uk）

確か２年位前にストロークスのメンバーがこのバンドのバッジを付けてるって辺りからＮＭＥとかで盛り上がった記憶があるのだが、ＥＰ２枚を経て、待望のデビュー・アルバムでござります。プレスでの取り上げられ過ぎぶりからハイプとして毛嫌いする向きもあろうかとは思われるのだが、ハイプ大好きの私から見てもこのバンドかなりの本格派ではないでしょうか。ヴォーカル、カレン・Ｏ嬢のヴォーカルはパティ・スミスやＰＪハーヴェイを連想させますが、それにも増して男性メンバーのオタクっぽさ、ジャケットのセンス等が文科系の血をも騒がせます。ＮＹパンクの正当的な継承者と思われるのです。Ｍ５のＯ嬢の「あはん」に身悶えます。

このCDを聴いていると、「ぎりぎり」だな、と思う。
冷静なドラム、ギターラインとは明らかにボーカルの質が異なる、と思う。質というか、態度というか。
その３人のテイストがぎりぎりの所でバランスを保っているような感じがする。
私は彼女の歌が好きだ。
とても上手だと思う。この作品ではそれがとてもよく伝わってくる。

ちょっと、いかれちゃってるだけ。
そして、このバンドのギタリストはとても素敵な感じなのです。

ニューヨーク発、痛烈なガレージ・サウンドとセンセーショナルでセクシーなKaren Oという女性のヴォーカルをフューチャーした３人組バンドのこれまたセンセーショナルなデビュー・アルバム！彼ら自身のレーベル「Shifty」からリリースされ、後に「Touch&Go」からリイシューされたデビュー・シングル「Yeah Yeah Yeahs」で衝撃的なデビューを果たした彼らですが、セカンド・シングル「Machine」では１枚目ほどのインパクトは感じられない凡庸なガレージ・パンクだったんで、メジャー・デビューとなるこのアルバムには、ちょっと心配しましたが、そんな心配を吹き飛ばすかのような傑作となりました。勢い一発になりがちだった彼らのサウンドが、優れたサウンド・プロダクションのもと、より深みを増したものとなっています。荒々しいガレージ・サウンドの中に閉じ込められたキーボードや電子楽器類のサウンドが効果的に鳴り響き、Karenのヴォーカルも叫び続けるだけではなくて、よりヴォーカリストとして豊かな表現力を身につけ、ポップ・サウンドとしての機能性が充実しました。そして何より、バンド・サウンドの表情が豊かになり、よりアーティスティックになった事も見逃せませんね。やっぱりニュー・ヨークの血といおうか、アート・パンクやノー・ウェイヴの雰囲気さえ感じさせるようになったような。それもHoneymoon Killersあたりの凶暴な芸術感があるような。もはやWhite StripesやStrokesと比較するのはやめないか、と言いたいですね。個性を確立した大傑作アルバム！
