1920年代に起こった“アメリカ史の汚点”とも言われるサッコ=ヴァンゼッティ事件を基に映画化。靴屋のサッコと漁行商人のヴァンゼッティは拳銃所持の密告により逮捕されてしまう。しかし、逮捕の理由は別にあり、身に覚えのない理由だった。

アメリカで実際に起きた事件を映画化。二人の青年が身に覚えのない強盗殺人の犯人として死刑を受けるまでを描く。音楽はエンニオ・モリコーネ。

1920年代のアメリカ。
二人のイタリア移民が強盗殺人事件の容疑者として起訴されました。
靴職人のサッコと魚の行商人ヴァンゼッティ。
かくしてアメリカ裁判史に残るサッコ＆ヴァンゼッティ事件の幕が開きます。

この事件が政治的謀略による冤罪事件であることは広く知られていますが、政治の波に翻弄されてゆくサッコとヴァンゼッティの姿を、映画はメロドラマ性を排したドキュメンタリータッチで描いてゆきます。

特に映画の中核をなす法廷シーンの迫力は圧巻で、検察側だけでなく弁護側の政治的思惑も結果的に二人を追い詰めてゆくことになるのですが、その過程のサスペンスフルな演出は実に見事です。

政治のためのシンボルとして利用され、しかし人間としての尊厳は堅持したまま、死刑台へと!送られたサッコとヴァンゼッティ。

ラストに流れるジョーン・バエズの透明な歌声は、二人の魂への鎮魂歌のようです。
主演の二人、ジャン・マリア・ヴォロンテとリカルド・クッチョーラの名演も忘れられません。
30年以上の歳月を経ての再会でしたが、その感動は全く風化していませんでしたし、また風化させてはならない名編だと思います。

1927年このような冤罪事件がアメリカ合衆国において起こっていたとは。
イタリア系アメリカ人２人がかれらがアナキストというだけで先に移住し権力を手にしていたアメリカ人により強盗として、でっち上げられ死刑に処せられた。
アナキストの靴屋と魚屋の存在をアメリカはゆるさなかった。
なぜ、強盗犯をでっち上げたのか。

一つ、アナキストはアメリカ合衆国に敵対する者である。
二つ、イタリア人は貧しい野蛮人である。
２時間、きっちりと描かれている事件の真相。
イタリア人の怒りが凝縮している。
２人の男の闘いとかれらを救おうとする世界の市民たちとの救援運動は感動させる。
死刑を言い渡されたときの魚屋の演説はさすがイタリア人という感じ。

死刑台の椅子に座るまで。
尊厳に満ちあふれていた。
1970年にイタリアによってつくられた映画。
1970年という時代であったからつくることが可能だったのかもしれない。

今、日本が考えるべき問題裁判員制度を良く映画です。
彼らが、犯人がどうか分かりません。
犯人ではない、可能性が高いでしょう。
犯人の可能性は、あります。
でも、その可能性はその日その町のすべての男性と同じ確率です。
人種差別。移民排除。
今、アメリカのイラクやアラビア系の人間への人種差別。 移民排除。 同じです。
