大好きな作品です。特に気分が落込んだりした時に見るといい気分転換になってくれるので捨てがたいです。
主演はＧ・ハックマンで共演がバーバラ・ハーシーとデニス・ホッパーと映画ファンでないとピンとこないかもしれませんが、かなり７０年代のアメリカンニューシネマの匂いを感じさせるベテランたちです。

だから地味な作品でも味わいがあるというか決して「軽く」ないんです。
お話はど田舎の高校のバスケットチームが新任のコーチに率いられて州大会の優勝決定戦にまで進出するというドリームストーリー。これはインディアナ州で５４年に起こった事実を下敷きにしたもの。
とはいえ、ストーリー自体はまぁよくある話なわけです。

しかし細部や人物描写が丁寧に織り込まれいて分かっていてもつい応援せずにはいられなくなるんですね。これぞ映画のマジック！
特筆すべきはまずカメラワーク。初秋から冬にかけてのノスタルジックでどこか懐かしい田園地帯の美しい風景を見事にとらえています。

しかし試合のシーン（特にクライマックス）では一転、スピーディーで縦横に動き回る映像がひたすら見る者の興奮を呼び覚ましてくれます。

そして極めつけは名手ジェリー・ゴールドスミスの音楽！オーケストラサウンドに電子楽器の音を盛りこんでいて古臭くないんですねぇ。

特に試合シーンのテーマは日本のシンクロチームが演技で使ったこともあるほどダイナミックで本当にすばらしいの一言に尽きます。

スポーツ映画であり大人のロマンス映画であり、敗者復活の物語でもあります。見ていて気持ちのいい作品ってのは中々出会えないものですが、この映画のような作品との出会いがあるから映画はやめられないのだ。
