スコットランドの前衛ロックバンド、モグワイ。音の野蛮人という彼らのレッテルは変わらないかもしれないが、新作『Happy Songs for Happy People』を聴く限り、もはや単に宇宙船からの脱出をサウンドでシミュレーションしていた頃の彼らではない。以前は民主的であったとはいえ、ステュアート・ブレイスウェイトが実質上バンドリーダーを務めており、彼の荒々しいギターがバンドのシンボルだった。しかし今作からはマルチプレーヤー、バリー・バーンズが後を継いだ。ブレイスウェイトのギターに比べるとだいぶおとなしいが、「Hunted By a Freak」ではエフェクトたっぷりのボーカルがどこか弱々しいハートを歌い、霊感漂う「I Know You Are But What Am I?」では瞑想的なピアノを聴かせてくれる。
とはいえ何よりもこのアルバムの魅力となっているのは、純粋な幸福感である。アンプ全開のアップナンバー「Ratts of the Capital」ではダークでスケールの大きいメタルサウンドにオーケストラのベルと何回もオーバーダブしたギターを調和させてしまっている。いきなり出てくるバンジョーのインタールードやゲストボーカルも、エンディングへと向かうゆっくりとした流れを邪魔していない。
ただモグワイは燃え尽きてしまったのかと心配する人もいるだろう。確かに代表作『Come On Die Young』のような作品を望むのは無理かもしれない。しかし常に変化し続けるモグワイのサウンドはみずみずしくパワフル。彼らはまだまだ健在だ。(Louis Pattison, Amazon.co.uk)
